Why is the Republican Party so anti-gay??

Any thoughts?

Isn't the Republican Party supposed to be about small government, personal freedom, pro-business, pro-military, personal responsibility and fiscal responsibility?

So why does the GOP keep on demonizing & hating on us gay people? If this is about the Bible and "it's a sin!", well then don't Christians believe that Jews and Buddhists are going to the same place where "unrepentant gays" are going? Don't Christians believe that premarital sex, divorce, and having children out of wedlock is a sin?

So why don't Christians & Republicans demonize Jews, Buddhists, etc etc like how they do to gays? Why don't Christians & Republicans pick on divorced people and single mothers to the same extent they do to gays, or in their words "those living the homosexual lifestyle"?

But where are conservative gay people supposed to go, if they find some of the positions of the Democratic party to be a little too "left" for their tastes?

Has anyone heard of the Libertarian Party? Are there gay libertarian groups out there?

I've heard of the Libertarians of course, I'm most favorable to their party, but I do not believe 100% in what they believe.

But then the republican party is full of self-loathing closeted homosexuals. Ken Mehlman helped Bush get elected on an anti-gay platform all the while he's packing fudge himself. The loathsome creature came out in 2010 and apologized for his actions.

Don't forget Paul Babeu, Larry Craig, Phillip Hinkle, George Rekers, Troy King, Richard Curtis, Ted Haggard, David Drier, Bruce Barclay, Roy Ashburn, Jim West, Ed Schrock, Mark Foley, Philip Hinckle..... just to name a few anti-gay gay republicans caught with a dick up their butt.

There's nothing slimier than an anti-gay gay republican.

It was earlier when the Democrats banished the "dixiecrats". It is what cost Dewey the 1948 election too. The election map from 1948 also shows where "segregation" is strongest in the US due to Strom Thurmond.

In terms of why gays are targeted so fervently: people need someone to hate and the gay population is an easy target. It's small enough, full of a bunch of people that until recently have been conditioned to feel guilty and self-loathing, and it's a "sin" that is unique to us. Unlike adultery, greed, divorce, sloth, lust, etc. which inflicts the entire population, a straight person is not going to randomly "fall off the bandwagon" and turn gay one day- which makes it easier for them to hate us. And, then, there is the group that knows they are gay or has felt gay feelings, but ironically has chosen to remain in straight relationships where they are bitter, unhappy, and incomplete and take it out on us for finding happiness in who we are. I've always equated gay hate to when they used to claim that left-handed people were possessed by the devil; easy to do if you're right-handed like the vast majority of the population.

No they are not pro-marriage, any real conservative analysis of the issue show that gay marriage is pro-marriage. The party sold it soul to the religious conservatives and are selling out all the other principles they supposedly believe in to support the pro-marriage propaganda.

Really good answer!!! There are lots of reasons, but you summed it up well. It's the one sin where they feel statistically is the least likely to strike home. In our local newpapers internet boards during this CFa crisis, I've listened to the paranoid right. And the one thing I point out to them is if you're going to live by the word of the Bible, but be consistent. Make sure you also stone to death your children who are glutons and drunks, those who have divorced and/or remarried, adulterers, and those having pre-marital sex. I remind them that if you kick ALL of those peope out of your congregations, you'd be tossing 90% of it. But, it's easier and safer to just go after gays.

The right has always needed a common enemy...Communists, Muslims, and now Gays.

This is a large part of it. But as that old show from the 1970's "All in the Family" proved very successfully there were plenty of non-critical thinking, bigoted, religious, homophobes living in the NE who were die hard Republicans like Archie Bunker. They never had to leave Queens or even visit the bible belt.
Some how it is assumed with sound reasoning that all hate comes from the uneducated southern bigot and other parts of the Country get a pass. While dated All in the Family wouldn't see the light of day in 2012, however that mindset was the focus of one of the most successful American TV shows. Everyone in the mid Atlantic, mid-west, or NE knew a Archie Bunker.
