Why is there a 14 yr old diver in Olympics?

](*,)](*,)

not sure why, but for diving 14 is an acceptable age. i guess each sport has its own age limit. (just a guess)

eM.

Most other sports in the Olympics don't have age limits, and in my opinion, all shouldn't. The Olympic games are a time for the best of the best in a given field to showcase their talents, and if they're skilled enough, they're rewarded for their efforts.

I do think that, if the rumors of passport falsification of the Chinese Women's Gymnastics team are true, it kind of sucks, but did the Chinese out-perform the American girls? Most definitely.

I was wondering about this to, with all the things about gymnastics not being 16, this diver is famous in England for only being 14.

thanks for the answers.

Great Olympics as well, will miss it now its over.

In gymnastics, young girls under the age of 16 are NOT allowed to participate because of the "child labor laws" that forbid causing the "kids" to train for that man hours (6-8) a day, 6 days a week, etc. It's dangerous for their under-developed bodies to exercise so strenuously at that age. Where as in diving, you can be as young as 13 and participate because the type of training is NOT as debilitating to youngsters.

China "will" do anything to win those gold medals and the heck with the health of the young women involved for they have so many people that they are and besides they are only "girls"!!!

Damn them!(*8*)

Don't they (most gymnasts, not just China's) start around the age of 4 or 5? You can't just pick up the sport at 15 or 16 and be able to compete at any level from the get go, let alone for the Olympics. And child labor laws don't apply because they're not getting paid.

The age minimum for women's (girls' really) gymnastics is because most girls at 14 and under haven't started puberty so their bodies are best equipped to perform those difficult moves. Once they hit puberty, the development of their hips and breasts begins to throw off their center of gravity and balance. For instance, Nadia Comaneci won when whe was 14 in 1976, but in 1980 her body was totally different and she couldn't defend her titles. Of course, now with much more rigorous training and diet, it's easy to delay the onset of puberty and slow down it's physical effects on the body. To even out the playing field, they made the age rule.

It was their parents who chose that way for the girls to be trained to be an athelete, whether they're old enough to participate the Games or not, they could always make their own decision if they had the guts to resist their parents or their parents could change their minds. So, it has nothing to do with China herself.

I have a friend who practiced gymnastics when he was young, but he gave it up for it was extremely exhausting and hard.

Wasn't the age limit of 16 imposed on gymnastics because of certain coutries forcing young girl gymnasts to take drugs to supress puberty to make them more successful?

As a result the minimum age of 16 came about (although some of the Chinese girl gymnasts looked to be about 10 years old this year, hmm).

As for Tom Daley, he's a damn good diver and the current European men's champion. Hopefully come 2012 he'll be up in the medals.

Also have to say that some of the judging in the diving was appalling. Why they can't watch the replays before awarding the points is beyond me.
