Why so many gay Jews?

I've always wondered why are there so many gays amongst such a small group of people worldwide.

I've heard Israel is the gay capital of the world, israeli gay pornos, and time and again you meet gay jews.

You already have gay rabbis (well before any gay priest) and as i said before I've met many.

I am aware that there are also gay butchers. I have met a few. I do not assume that all, or most butchers are gay.

oh really?

Perhaps it's not that there is a larger percentage of gay Jews as compared to other religions (or the population in general), but that there are more gay Jews who are open and out. We don't seem to have that vehemently negative religious barrier to overcome as compared other religions, at least in my experience.

Actually, I know what you're talking about. There are a lot of gay Jews, it seems more than the average population. But really what it's about is that Jewish culture tends to be liberal, especially US Jews, and its more accepting to come out than say, blacks, hispanics, asians, or even Christian whites. So it's not the percentage is higher, it's the percentage who come out is.

That was actually one of the tenets of homosexuality according to this station in Buffalo (I did not record what they said, it was 5 years ago. I hold grudges longer than Sarah Palin can).

I don't know where you heard that Israel is the world's gay capital, I'm from Israel and there is no such thing. Tel Aviv has a gay scene, and there is an underground porn industry, but its more straight than gay, and is dominated by Russian immigrants.

And about there being so many gay Jews, its an American thing. We need to start realising that American Jewry is not representative of world Jewry, in Israel, almost half of the Jews are of Middle Eastern origin, and they culture differs significantly from European Jews, and the Jews of America who mostly are Eastern European. American Jews are much more liberal and have fought for equality for many different marginalised groups, including gays, so it seems like there are a lot of gay Jews.

The Jewish faith does NOT say its okay to be gay, one is free to pick and choose what they want to adhere to in the scriptures, but it would be erroneous to say that Judaism is permissive of homosexuality. American Jews overwhelmingly are gay friendly, but there is a huge difference.
