Yet another news article on ______________ turning their back on President Obama. But this time if you are to believe the author it is due to race or racism. I'm a bit skeptical for his poll numbers appear to be falling across the board however I think it is good and healthy for whites be they liberal, independent or conservative to search their 'soul.'

By Melissa Harris-Perry

President Obama has experienced a swift and steep decline in support among white Americans--from 61 percent in 2009 to 33 percent now. I believe much of that decline can be attributed to their disappointment that choosing a black man for president did not prove to be salvific for them or the nation. His record is, at the very least, comparable to that of President Clinton, who was enthusiastically re-elected. The 2012 election is a test of whether Obama will be held to standards never before imposed on an incumbent. If he is, it may be possible to read that result as the triumph of a more subtle form of racism.

What are Ms. Harris-Perry's sources? Who is doing the polls? How reliable are they?

Not sure what you're trying to get at.

I acknowledge that "race" might be a factor.

But please allow a few, those from around the world who don't live here, but are interested in the dialogue to please factor in the following:

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIFY9h8DImg[/ame]

In my lifetime nothing has been MORE at stake.

To reduce it to 1960's platitudes, without any true or real passion, takes away from the "revolution" that took place 40 years ago.

AND...

RACE no longer seriously adds anything to the discussion....unless you're a Republican.

If anything it only proves that the current 2011 GOP are nothing more than a bunch of 1950's Ku Klux Klan, WHITE SUPREMICIST hold outs.

Very carefully masked over into "statistics" and as a "selling point" to VOTE REPUBLICAN in 2012, because "might/white" *cough* "makes right."

President Obama "over sold" his campaign promises back in 2008.

At this point this American will take a "failed promise" over FAILED Reaganomics of the past 30 years, over anything that the current GOP is offering as "hope."

I'm just saying.

It's akin to the whole "Class Warfare" argument.

Holy smokes. In this thread it's "white liberals". In another thread it's African Americans.

Who's the next thread going to be about?

Left-handed one-eyed Amerasian Episcopalians with a limp?

Your arguement makes no sense. Herman Cain just trounced the white guys in Florida , in the "1950's KKK, White Supremicist party" strawpoll. You are spouting your own opinions, not facts.

Centex - help us understand your perspective...

The black guy won by a landslide in the conservative straw poll.

Are you concerned because you think liberals and blacks are trending racist now according to these polls? I don't think it is based on race as much as the individual holding the office.

I agree with you. I don't follow Centex's logic, or his assumptions about what the GOP stands for, racially.

It's a mistake to assume that, because Obama has low job approval ratings from white liberals, they will not vote for him. The Republican Party has morphed into a neo-fascist party that wants to discredit the very idea of government by obstructing the workings of the legislative branch to prevent it from doing anything to improve the economy. They believe that, while this will discredit both political parties, since Democrats control the presidency, people will ultimately punish the Dems more than the Republicans, which will enable them to take power. It's cynical and disgusting, but that is the modern day Republican Party.

Back to white liberals. I think, at the end of the day, they will vote for Obama because the alternative is so awful. For a good read on this subject, everyone should read Frank Rich's latest article.

Let's understand that "white liberals" have not abandoned Obama. Obama has abandoned us and the rhetoric that got him elected. I shall - holding my nose - vote for him again (IF he is the nominee).

I don't think the Republicans are racist. I think they are simpletons.

That sounds like modern day politics.

I don't see why they would, necessarily. A good chunk of conservatives, moderates, independents, and libertarian-leaning whites voted for Obama in 2008 because they were so fed up with the Bush administration. I don't see why white liberals wouldn't flop the same way and vote Republican if they were that disgusted or displeased with Obama's term.

In 2008 Barack Obama was viewed by very many as the attractive and progressive alternative to the McCain/Palin ticket.

Should Perry receive the Republican Party nomination I rather believe that the swing voter will back the devil they know, Barack Obama who despite not measuring up to expectation remains the more attractive option as the moderate candidate who can draw the middle of the road voter.

To me the very thought of victory by the GOP/Tea Baggers in 2012 is like bad wet dream.

Yes, I agree completely.

not to mention the anti Bush

Perry is not electable and less so every day he lives/breathes

so I agree with you

The comparison Harris-Perry tries to make between Obama and Clinton flounders on a simple yet fundamental point: the economy was growing in 1996! Unemployment is, by far, the biggest factor in Obama's unpopularity. (After all, it was a recession that swept George Bush the elder out of office in the first place.)

I also wish people would remember that Perot was on the ballot in '96. That completely muddies the waters of any comparison.

I suspect that a great many white liberals stayed home in '96, as well; despite Clinton's victory, the Republicans held both houses of Congress. It's certainly possible to imagine that a better nominee (plus no Perot) would have resulted in a GOP victory.

I am no fan of Obama but I will never, ever vote for Perry or anyone else that the Republicians have to offer right now.
We may not know their plans for the economy but we sure know that they would like to push all LGBT people back into the closet and lock the door.
