Why Why Whhhhhhhhhhhhhhhy?

At the end of the 1970's or beginning of the 1980's the Japanese production of a Chinese tale, called "Monkey", and also "The Water Margin" dubbed people with god awful pastiches of a Charlie Chan accent. I grew up with a generation of people making such inscrutable accents a part of bullying in my childhood by kids who only had that to go on.

Maybe they do it to make the characters seem vaguely foreign. I see your point but if the actor has a too easy to place American/English accent, that can be distracting too. A couple of years back, they showed Helen of Troy on American TV and one of the minor characters was played by the guy who played Vince on British Queer as Folk. He was cute and did a perfectly fine job except he spoke with this strong Manchester accent. You just didn't feel like you were in Ancient Greece! I mean it would be odd if some Japanese guy running around in a samurai costume spoke with a Texas twang.

I've noticed it too, and it gets annoying. If I'm watching something where an Asian person is speaking in their native, non-English language about the history of their Asian country, I get the point well enough that the voice I hear is, in fact, a translator.

Maybe people have gotten too stupid to realize this and they dumbed down?

Tony Curtis has yet to live down his "Yonda lies da castle of my fadda" in The Black Shield of Falworth. Fifty-two years and counting, and it still tops the list.

John Wayne's "Truly this was the Son of God..." in The Greatest Story Ever Told is probably a close second...

I don't quite follow what you are saying. Are you saying that in Japan the TV companies hire an American to dub American interviews, a Canadian to dub Canadian, Chinese to dub etc., etc., or are you saying that the companies use Japanese translators so YOU don't hear the accent or if you hear an accent it doesn't sound "right". If it is the latter, they may be using an American, who learned Japanese in let's say Australia (and picked up that accent), or, they could be using a Japanese translater that learned to speak English from an East Indian teacher (for the sake of arguement) and picked up that teachers accent or...sorry, I've confused myself!

I vastly prefer subtitles to dubbing.

I go way out of my way to avoid dubbing.

Ok, I would say that the studio that releases a film releases the film in the language of the country that it is produced in and doesn't always do the dubbing in country ie: "Dirty Harry" was produced in the US but they didn't dub into Japanese so whichever company bought the rights to show it in Japan did their own dubbing and the point of the dubbing is so non-english speaking Japanse could understand what is being said, but then if it is being dubbed into Japanese so the Japanese non-speaking english could understand it, how would you make a Japanese speaker talk and sound like Clint Eastwood in Japanese or a film produced in Japan that is released to American audience has not been dubbed in Japan it has to be dubbed into english in. .. ... I've confused myself again. I'm going to bed

If everyone would just speak English, we wouldn't have this problem.
