I think at this particular juncture, any PM is better than Ruddy. I reckon his party feels the same way. He has spent so much of Prime Ministership being try-hard cool, that he forgot to actually do the job for which he was elected.

I rather like Julia Gillard - she seems far FAR more capable and let's hope she reconstitutes the cabinet, if she becomes PM cos frankly, the current one is shite!

We'll see.

It's official .... Julia Gillard is the new Prime Minister of Australia. Our first ever female PM.

^ Thanks for the long answer, but you didn't really answer my question.

Is she good or bad news for gay rights????

What is to be expected from her????

We had one of those before!
Also I think her hair looks like it is about to slide off

You had the born in England version with a distinct right wing accent.

The new Aussie PM is a born in Wales version with a distinct left wing accent.

Hair styles should not influence government policies. Even if the new Aussie PMs partner is a hairdresser. That could be good for gay marriage rights in Australia. I understand that the happy couple have no children. Speculate.

Here's hoping she does a better job than our first female PM Kim Campbell. She wasn't elected, though. She got in when Brian Mulroney went walkabout. (Sorry, had to use that at least once. Unfortunately, he didn't go walkabout quite far enough. He's still in Canada.)

Anyway, Kim had the chance to make history. She did. . . by losing the federal election a few months later and even losing her riding.

I'm optimistic about Julia Gillard. First step, she's already called a truce between the government and the mining companies over the super profits tax. Good first step.

I have aspirations for her too, I'm from the area shes the local member for too, so a little bias :P

She's a lot more warmer and suitable for the job, so hope it goes well!

Wow, New Zealand had one of those as Prime Minister about 11 years ago.

Is Australia behind or what?

it still amazes me that these countries dont have the electorate decide who becomes leader of their country. i thought american politics were bad.

you elect pms the same way the uk does and we know that was a clusterfuck. you always get an insider when using parlimentary elections. put it another way, obama would never have been elected "PM" of america if it were up to OUR elected officials.

Evanrick, we elect our Prime Minister's in legal constitutional elections. And unlike other countries, every single citizen is required to vote, therefore the Party that wins the most seats can be seen as more truly and completely elected as leading body than many other countries. What happened here was that Kevin Rudd's completely legally elected government lost faith with him, he stepped down, and the Deputy took over. In the coming months there will be an election and Julia Gillard will have to try and win the most votes to maintain Labor Party Leadership. What happened recently is incredibly rare in Australia.

And on Julia being PM, I'm stoked! She's a much better option than Kevin and her first press conference was very impressive. I think (and hope) that she will be open minded to gay marriage if that issue raised more prominently by a member of Parliament.

Oh and Evanrick, give Obama a chance. It's not his fault Bush completely screwed over America for 8 years.
