Do you usually open up your purse strings this time of year and donate to homeless causes or even give out directly to your local needies? Or is your attitude selfish and fuck em all and you don't give a toss?

Personally, I am a little more giving this time of year. I guess the holiday spirit is still smouldering somewhere from within my jaded being...

I think that people who detest the bell ringers outside wal mart or wherever are fucked up. GET WITH THE SPIRIT OF THE SEASON YOU GRINCHES!!!!!!!!

Why wait for Christmas? People are needy every single day throughout the year. When you go shopping, grab a few extra things and drop them into the charity bins near the door on your way out.

No, I dont have the money.

Homeless people, for example, need socks more than they need cans of food

I know this will sound miserly, but I already pay vast amounts of income tax every month, much of which the government spends on the "needy". I don't really feel it necessary to do more.

I give a fixed amount out of my paycheck through the Combined Federal Campaign to my local charities that provide services to the homeless and food distressed my local area all year round. I taken in recent years a position on charity at home and helping those in basic need first. I also give to the those on the spot donation bins like the bell ringer kettles if I know they are a legitimate charity providing similar support.

I think there is a story set in 1843 London in December where the main character says almost the exact same thing as you do here.

We are very giving and give throughout the year. We go shopping and deliver grocery items to the food banks, donate our old stuff to good will or salvation army. For Christmas I buy at least a dozen gifts for people that work at some of the places I shop. Last year some of them even cry because they just could not believe that someone would think of them especially and buy them a personal gift. Though I do not do it to please myself I must admit that the satisfaction and joy that I get from it carries me through the year.

I probably am less charitable at this time of year, than any other. I certainly don't let the "Holidays" rule me. No, I give at any time of the year. It's a lot less expected if somebody gets a good gift or something else helpful (such as, perhaps, time) in April or September or something like that. I'm also not as out-and-about during the holidays, and the rest of winter, compared to other times of the year.

My charity is a one-on-one thing; I never know whether my charity to an organization will actually filter down to those who need it. Being one-on-one, that usually means I need to be "out and about" and, because of the weather, the needy are also more likely to be invisible and indoors somewhere...

Yes but how do you know the tax really helps those who need it? By direct giving to your local charity you get the money to where it can do the most good. Unload some of that hard earned cash.....LOL

Perhaps but having worked at food banks for years, I would say food donations have a big impact too. Probably exceeding socks. This time of year warm clothing is a biggie especially in the recent cold snap here in the nw/lower mainland. Homeless need all sorts of things so I would agree socks are important too.
But I do understand your situation and not being able to give.

Great point...I suppose during the holidays there's just extra focus on the needy. It kinda all kicks off with Thanksgiving where we give thanks but also remember those less fortunate. The holidays underscore the good in all of us...usually.

I'm not so sure about that. Black Friday tends to make people think more about fighting off other shoppers for that precious big screen TV than buying a few boxes of Kraft Dinner for the food bank donation box.

I usually give to a variety of charities but as I've been unemployed for 6 months and haven't yet had an interview I've effectively cancelled Christmas in my house this year. Maybe next year I will again.
