  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Will you give to the needy this Holiday?

I usually give to a variety of charities but as I've been unemployed for 6 months and haven't yet had an interview I've effectively cancelled Christmas in my house this year. Maybe next year I will again.

That you make the effort is what counts. chin up raven, youll be on the up soon enough :)

I give to a variety of charities throughout the year.

One of my favorites this time of year is a local drive for "Coats for Kids". I can remember freezing my balls off in the winter waiting for the bus as a kid, so I like giving to this one. A local company matched up to 10 thousand for every thousand donated by other businesses and they reached their goal of 20,000. I bought ten coats for about 1.5% of that so they should be able to keep the needy kids warm this winter.

I live in the city now, so I see several permanent homeless, usually older men and a few women. I am giving them my old blankets, if they will have them. I suspect as I am about walking my dogs I may find the blankets again, discarded, wet and dirty. I will have to decide then if it is worth the time to hose them off and launder them to be reused.

No matter how good you have it, we are all only a few steps away from being needy. So i intend to help people the way I would want to be helped.

I have several causes that I contribute to throughout the year. When I was preparing for my move to Arizona, I donated a lot of my old stuff to local thrift shops that benefit the the local school district and the mentally handicapped. I also donate to specific programs at both of my old universities, and I have a few other groups that I support.

For individuals...I do all the time but the thing that is different this time of the year is that sometimes I don't wait for someone to ask or approach me....I will go up to them if I can tell they need it. I hate that it is so cold outside at night and so many people don't have anywhere to turn.

As for charities...I will usually donate year round. The only possible difference is that sometimes during the holidays when someone wants to exchange gifts I tell them I would rather they donate to Boys Town in my name...or theirs...or anonymously...and I offer the same in return.

Yes, I put money in the Salvation Army kettles and I buy a couple of gifts for the needy in a drive my church has. I also donate to a couple of charities throughout the year. Nothing big, but something.

^Good for you. This anti-salvation army business is so silly.
