Except for Shatner's version of My Way which he 'sang' for George Lucas, this is one of the funniest things I've seen him do (short of pretending he was in severe pain on Star Trek:

And, in case you've never seen it, here's that My Way thing:

Ever notice how many of our "American" Celebrities hail from North of our border? They be a fair heap o' them! lol

Nice posting. Thanks.

Sorry, Corny, but he is right. The 'aboot' thing is heard only in a very small corner of our country and by a very small portion of that corner's population. Using that 'about/aboot' thing to define Canadians would be like using New England's 'car/cah' to define Americans.

well somehow then somebody from that corner must have made it into my corner :D
He was also doing the ".. eh?" thing all the time :D

The 'eh?' thing is not uncommon. The 'aboot' thing is a Maritime thing, and not even from all the Maritime provinces. As far as I can tell, it's more a 'small fishing village' thing on the north-eastern shores of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland where their speech is rapid-fire and quite unlike anything heard anywhere else in Canada.

I've lived in Ontario for 58 years. Only once had I heard someone I was talking to face-to-face say 'aboot', and he was a lobster fisherman from Nova Scotia.

Neil,
Peter Jennings of ABC World News Tonight fame had a bit of the "Aboot", which did a lot for projecting that into the American/world psyche on "how to identify a Canadian", eh?

Shatner forever rocks!

How can you not love the guy?

He knows how to laugh at himself....

Hey Neil,

Do you remember the Loblaws commercials that Shatner did in the mid-1970s?

Back then, Loblaws was also one of the largest supermarket chains in the Rochester and Buffalo areas too. (long before the domination of Wegmans and Tops) So they played on the local television stations quite frequently.

They would show Shatner, walking with a shopping cart, through a big, beautiful Loblaws store (I presume that the location was somewhere in Ontario because Loblaws didn't have stores that big and modern in this area). I can't recall most of the lines he said, but I do remember the punchline...

"Loblaws, where more than the price is right...but by gosh (heavy emphasis and pause here in his own unique style)...the price is right! And the lollipops are free!" (pops a lollipop into his mouth).

I've looked on YouTube to see if I can find the commercials, but nobody seems to have posted them yet... Oh well.....

Ronboy,
I remember Loblaws, along with Star Markets, but I don't remember the ads.
Must have been timing for me to not be paying as much attention to the tube.

That's one more time than I've ever heard anyone say aboot. I've met and worked with people from all over this country (including a lot of Maritimers) and not once did I ever hear anyone say aboot. I've often wondered who came up with the idea that all Canadians say aboot.

I remember them, but I don't remember them if you know what I mean. I can't remember the commercials, but I remember the lollipops.

It's just one of those easily-identifiable stereotypes to make sure the television audience knows the performers are talking about a Canadian. They also try to us 'Eh?' as well, but they don't do it properly and it comes out more like Fonzie's 'A-a-a-a-aye'.

I'm from "out east" and I can say that 'aboot' is not common place here. Mind you, I cry laughing when South Park rips on us Canucks with those Terrance and Philip guys!

Ironiocally, Molson merged with Coors, so they dropped the whole "I am Canadian" thing.

That's so funny and so true.

WHAT?! Does the Canadian Government know of this threat to their cultural history?!

^ They're not overly concerned. It's not really a threat. They're more concerned that the Parliamentary cafeteria will run out of poutine.
