Following on from JUB's fabulous and universally popular Death Pool thread, I introduce the financial equivalent...

Which company will hit the wall first in 2009?

I predict: WH Smiths, Clinton Cards, Iceland

Rules:

* Shops must have more than 20 branches
* Must be recognised PLC/LTD companies
* No insider trading is allowed

The winner will receive £250 ($250) of Woolworth's/Zavvi vouchers.

Woa woa there Ebenezer:

You're offering the same numerical amount in different currencies? Have you thrown exchange rates out the window, or are you trying to save a buck?

No, I anticipate that it will take a month for the winner to become clear, by which time....

Just like when I "won" the Death Pool.

We are so over.

I was discussing this with my boss a few weeks ago. And I think one of the problems with DSG is that they are competing with themselves. I live in a small City (Population 21k) in Cornwall, and we have a PC World, Currys, Currys.Digital and a Comet. Three of those are DSG. Where is the logic in that? All selling the exact same thing... albeit slightly different stock ranges.

US Companies I'm voting for:
Pier One Imports (Chapter 7 Liquidation)
General Growth Properties--Mall Developer--Chapter 11 Reorganization
JC Penney, Sears Holdings (or both)--Chapter 11
Denny's Restaurants (Chapter 7)

^Really, wow scary! It's all coming true ;)

ASDA, Tesco's & Sainsbury's.

Not being British, I've got a bit of a disadvantage here.

Sainsburys is a possible RIP candidate; I don't have enough info.
ASDA is now owned by Walmart; unlikely they will go under although some locations may close
Tesco entered the US market last year (2007) and has been called 'Walmart's Worst Nightmare'; projected revenue growth for 2008, once the numbers are in, are 13.6% versus Walmart's paltry 2%. So I don't think Tesco is a candidate for life support.

Walmart is the #1 Global retailer; Tesco is #3. Unlikely either will fail.

Oh, you're sooo sneaky with the 20 branch rule!
My #1 prediction was Waterford Wedgwood; but they have only 19 retail stores!

Wedgwood Heads For Administration
By Sky News

Fine china and crystal maker Waterford Wedgwood is to call in administrators, the company has announced.

The company, which employs more than 800 people in the UK and about 800 in Ireland, said it had suspended trading of its shares on the Irish Stock Exchange.

I was very surprised to hear that they are closing Borders Books on 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica. It is such a busy location. The books are being discounted below wholesale during the closing
