I'm annoyed that Winamp doesn't have a proper update function. Suggest me some similar and up to date Freeware/Open Source music/media players for Windows XP, except Windows Media Player, Foobar2000, iTunes, Mufin Player and Songbird.

Bonus points if it has common functions but still a small filesize (!)

I forgot: bonus points++ if it has skinning/themes support.

I used VLC Media Player when I had XP, use it now on Mac.

Most lightweight and fastest in my experience. Supports virtually every file-type.

I third VLC Media Player. Plays (almost) all file types and tells you when a new update is available. As for skins, I'm not sure if it has any, but you could look into it.

I already have VLC, but use it only for video files. Don't like the interface as a music player.

I just installed Winyl and will test if it's worth as a replacement. It has the most common, basic functions and it's possible to minimize the player to a small window.

My personal favorite is Media Monkey. It plays pretty much any audio file and is completely customizable. You get the border but can move the components inside to any place to create a ui that works for you. Also it's completely skinnable. I think most are on the media monkey wiki, but there may be more elsewhere.

If that doesn't seem like your cup of tea, I'll agree with T-Rexx that banshee is a great player. I've never used it in windows, but it's my standard player whenever I boot into linux.

Count in another VLC user for movies.

I like foobar for my music. I don't believe it has anything in the way of skins, but it has some nice customizing options and it's good for keeping things organized.
