Hi Al
I am using an original Windows 7 Home Edition. Lately a popup notice is constantly appearing on my desktop asking me to download the free upgrade to Windows 10. Is this real or a scam and is it really free? Please advice.

Thanks in advance.

Vic

My understanding is that they have to give it away to get some people to use it. Opinions vary.

I waited a few months so they could get the kinks worked out and finally upgraded at the end of November. It was a 2 week nightmare that nearly ruined my computer and I spent hours on the phone with MS support to try to make it work right. I finally reverted back to Windows 7 which also nearly ruined my computer. I think after a lot of effort it's finally back to normal. If you choose to upgrade don't expect it to go as smoothly as they lead you to believe.

My new computer came with Windows 10 - it is much better than 8 but I wish I could "upgrade" back to 7.

If your Windows 7 machine has Windows update KB3035583 it will get this message. I upgraded one computer in October but it failed to update multiple times and reverted back to windows 7 each time. Eventually after several hours wasted and multiple attempts it installed first time when I used Microsoft's Windows 10 Media Creation tool to install it instead of the in-built Windows update. I'm hanging fire from updating my other computer.

Did you know that in windows 10 you no longer have the options to choose or refuse updates?

If you know what you are doing, you can get the menu back, but even then, the 'never update' option is not functional.

Only by going into Services can you disable auto updates completely. Most people have no idea how to do that.

^That is, among other issues, what bothers me about Windows10. I know on this Android Tablet that I am using at the moment, you have install the updates immediately, but with Windows, until now, you have had the option to delay or even not install or look for updates. I just feel we should have some choice in the matter so that we don't have to suddenly stop what we are doing to get the updates installed.
And if there is a 'bad' update, then in 10 you have to install it, again, unlike in 7 or XP.

I have my settings to check for updates but I choose when and if to install on windows 7. Now when I check the indows update folder the icon or updating to windows 10 is there below it very small is show other updates. Clicking on that are the regularly monthly updates/patches. I check those to install and nothing happens the wheel just spins it never connects and down loads the regular updates. I can only update if I click the get started inside the windows 10 icon. That absolutely sucks. It installs win10 and the regular updates. when the terms popped up I clicked decline, the other updates where installed but not win10. This is a bullshit hassle. But the problems were not over even though I still had my current window 7. The sound was gone from my optional ASUS xonar sound card. I did a restore and holy shit a pop up came on unable to start pc, couldn't find a os. It opened a repair console and as I was heading out the door to get a lap top after a half hour to hour of this it restarted and every thing worked.

I will not be getting any more updates I guess from ms for this machine other then MSE. Fucking MS. I don't want to update to windows 10 on this 4 yr old machine because it does have a lot of optional shit that I use for media.

do it!
Win 10 is much safer than win7.
I have it on all my three copmputers.
You know it is free.

Is it just me or does windows 10 make your computer run slower. I installed it a month back and my computer was running so slow, i switched back to windows 7 and its been running beautifully.

I am quite happy with Windows7 for the forseeable future. There are still too many adverse reports out there about 10.

Upgraded to Windows 10 yesterday. Its ok. My problem was when I transfered movies to pendrive but only half of the movie was transfered. Anyone has same problem after upgrade?
