Windows 7 for $29.99 (need a "EDU" email address)

I'm getting this for my dad for christmas for his new Macbook Pro. (he suggested it, and he still needs windows for some things for work)

Hell, I might even do it.

Awww man I could buy this since I have a college email address! Thanks for this information I'm going to tell my Teacher on Monday about this offer.

You can get a free .edu email address at www.australia.edu. and there are no strings attached.

Sign up and receive an email saying your account request is being reviewed, unless you make a $20 "donation." Sounds fishy to me. We'll see what happens at the end of the "24-48 hour" review time.

Wow. How do we know if that site is official?

I found copies directly from Microsoft for about 47 bucks each, if you buy three. Thinking of buying the three package. ^^.

Also! The college I went to didn't give us a .edu email. >_>. We got a .ca.us

My laptop came with a free upgrade. That came the other day. Now all I have to do is find some time when I have the approx 8hrs that it apparently takes to do it...

Well, from what I've heard, this offer isn't as simple as just having an .EDU address - that's the broad criteria, but you have to enter your E-mail address to see if you quality - that is, if Microsoft has approved the domain you're coming from as a valid post-secondary institution in their database. So that Australian .EDU "provider" may not qualify anyway, and schools in other parts of the world (like Canada or wherever else) don't necessarily end in .EDU (and like notseb says, it may be .ca.us) but are recorded as authorized.

I can get mine via work (I'm a teacher) for €17=$25. ..|
(and yes, I signed up immediately)

Is it worth upgrading even though its just 29.99....

I have an edu email but don't know if i want to upgrade since i don't really mind vista.

When I upgraded my laptop last week (from Vista) it only took about 1 h. Then I upgraded my desktop at home, and it took about the same.

The only thing I had to do was uninstall my firewall, since it wouldn't upgrade with it on the system. Other than that, it was easy.

Well - for someone who is as far from being a tech head as you can imagine - that comes as something of a relief.

I looked online - and the most current thing I then found was from a journo (Australian, I think) who had just upgraded his 3 computers - and his warning was, if you want to do this 'make sure you have 8 hours to spare' - and that it wasn't just a 'let it run and forget it' scenario...he had a few issues to resolve with it.

I heard 7 runs faster than vista because it doesn't have all that crap loaded.

Not necessarily faster, it just runs better. MSoft cleaned up the code a lot, and fixed what should have been fixed when Vista came out in the first place.

One of the things I do miss about college, cheap software at the university bookstores.
