Windows 7 Sucks

Don't give up torrenting! I would die without it. !oops! I back up everything I buy, by torrenting it and putting it on an external hard-drive in case I ruin the discs of my movies.

Apple is where it's at!! Trust me. Once you go Mac, you'll never go Back. I'm serious. I love my iMac & MacBook pro

Yooper:
While I'm certainly not a fan of seeing windows on a POS, the fault is with the manufacture who setup the machines. They should have been tested at the factory, including both windows and POS. I'd blame them first this time before MS.

Both Vista & WinME are the worst pieces of software I think to ever come out of MS. Now to Microsoft's credit, they program to work on a WIDE range of hardware, where as that wonderful company called APPLE codes to work on a very NARROW range of hardware. They also much much more frequently cut off older hardware.

Evidently the new machines are running Windows XP. These are the puppies from NCR that went in:
http://www.ncr.com/documents/rp_80xrt_ds.pdf

I'm incredibly disappointed how unreliable they are. The machines work like the old IBM's we had so I'm assuming the new machines/OS don't get along with the old software. They run a program called SmartPOS (don't know who it is from). The old machines dated from 1989; don't know how old the actual application is.

okay .. so ravenstar either has hardware or virus issues from pirated downloads.
yooper obviously deals with some kind of idiotic company who offer to upgrade something and doesn't have a clue.

can someone explain me why win7 sucks now

OMG :luv:

Corny actually agrees with me!

I don't understand why these things are so bad! NCR and Microsoft. Something obviously has gone horribly wrong here. I had the opportunity to ask and the actual program we use all day long is a Microsoft program.

A 75% failure rate is not a good number.

I agree, upgrading a mac is infinitely easier than upgrading a windows machine.

the apple upgrade process = pay $5K for a new machine and call it a day. ;)

Send me $5k... and I still won't get a Mac. But I might be abe to avoid becoming homeless.

The laptop is only 4 or 5 months old and it's already had this problem before. Last time a tech friend of mine had to reinstall everything.

Today IE kept not responding, and YIM get not responding so I shut it down to reboot it and now I can't get it to open anything. It doesn't even give me the little windows icon.

I only have 7 because it came as part of the laptop.I'm trying to get it to repair itself but after 58 minutes of whirring and farting all it said was "windows is unable to fix this error, if you have downloaded a camera or music player, delete it and try again.

I can't get into computer to delete anything. :grrr:

When you can't get in, find a friend with a computer, go online, and make an image of a nice collection that will give you an UBCD -- "Ultimate Boot CD". My XP machine froze recently in a pattern that asked for a system PW that no one had ever installed, and with the UBCD I breezed right on by, stopping to make some repairs on the way.

As for Win7, my only problem with it is the way they re-wrote old classics like FreeCell and Spider Solitaire. Those were fine as they were, better than the new glitz and frills.

GSDX:
Holy Shit!!! Win98SE???? Are you serious??? I'd rather switch to linux then deal with that ancient crap.

My ancient system won't handle anything bigger or better, and I can't afford to upgrade or buy a new system.

I'm poor. Sue me.

Agree with most of what has been said above.

My old laptop had XP - was OK with that. Bought a new one - it was Vista. Disliked it so much I stuck with the old crummy dying laptop until I had the 7 upgrade, 2 or 3 months later. Fine with that.

Not an 'overhyped Apple' fan.

are you trying to install window 7 on your dinosaur PC ?

Win 7 works fine with me.

I've been running win7 since the ALPHA release. On my hardware it runs without a hitch. I rarely ever reboot my machine. It just sleeps at night.

What I have found over the years working with windows in general:

Memory. This is the big one. Windows has an UNCANNY knack at discovering a single bad ram address and crashing. Most other OS will run fine. So good ram is VITAL.

I'll actually install XP on a computer to test the ram. More reliable than ram check software.

Power supply. On desktop machines, a $17 power supply from sparkle power ain't gonna cut it. A PC NEEDS good, clean power. Replace cheap power supply and instability issues vanish. Your HARD DRIVE will love you for it as well.
MANY HD failures are caused by lousy power supplies.

Lastly.... Drivers. We've all been there. Try newer and sometimes older drivers, especially for the graphics card.

I run only Nvidia cards since I find them the most stable at the moment.

All in all, I love win7.

It does have a quirk with my SSD system drive, but I KNOW it is the drive itself not being 100% compatible with win7.

Soon I'll change it out, end of story.

:=D: :=D:

Some of us out here don't just have five grand laying around to toss on new gear. Too many folks seem to blithely assume no one could have a problem going out and spending like fifteen hundred on a new machine.

GSDX, if I'd known that was what you had, I could have shipped you my dad's old Win 2k machine that we gave away.

Wouldn't dream of it. I've been in the situation where I've either not had access to a computer at all, or had to run what I had into the ground before I could find the funds to do anything about it. But you might want to look at the quote below from T-Rexx.

Contact the Peterborough Linux Users Group and tell them you are willing to switch to Linux if they can find an old computer for you that no one is using any more. They've got plenty of such machines that are old but still much more powerful than what you've got. And trust me, they would love to find someone like you to give them to, gsdx.

They will help you and will install Linux on it for you. They will coach you through whatever problems you may have.

And we're always standing by in the Tech Talk forum for any questions or problems as well.

Now this got more interesting.... NCR hardware running both MS OS (likely XP Pro based embeded) with MS POS I'm assuming some Dynamics Variant. I would love to know what actually is faulty if it is the software or the hardware. Who ever at your company is responsible for this upgrade needs to RIP NCR a new one, and get the issues ironed out.

Here I tend to agree with Audio Tech, windows has this annoying ability to find faulty ram in a system and use it, so it crashes.

if man is 5
then the devil is 6
then God is 7 :hurray:

A priest I once knew with a B.S. in math pointed out that 5 and 7 are prime, and therefore perfect in themselves; 6, being not so, is forever stuck refusing to accept stepping down to be 5 and unable to climb to 7 -- a most miserable state, surely a numeric equivalent of hell. :D
