Windows 8 Consumer Preview

Lol at all these real world user videos! Learning ONE new command (or two including the WinKey) to open the Start Menu won't kill you and doesn't make the OS a failure - their attitudes to not learning about the new system are a failure. Like all previous versions Windows there'll be a tour when you first start up a new device for the first time, so that should solve that problem for final version users.

Some interesting comments from Ray Ozzie, the guy chosen by Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer to move Microsoft in new directions after Gates' departure. Ozzie, who left MS in 2010, says that Windows 8 is make-or-break for MS.

Ozzie says that Windows 8 will determine Microsoft's place in the tech world. If Win8 fails in the market, especially the non-desktop market, Microsoft will be left far behind the likes of Apple and Google.

And, unfortunately, I don't think Microsoft has learned their lesson about tablet pricing. A windows tablet, even with shiny Windows 8, is not worth more than an iPad or a Galaxy Tab. If they are priced higher, they will fail.

^^ MS will have to take it in the rear for a bit if they want OEMs to install W8 on their tablet devices. The added cost alone would price it above android. Well, less the $5 license fee

I've been playing around with W8 Server Beta/wedontknowwhatsgoingon.1

One can install just the CLI version or the full GUI. FFS does MS not know how to implement CLI administration - holy fuck! What an exercise in kicking oneself in the bollocks.

I installed the GUI version and guess what? Metro interface. I laughed so hard. In this instance they can't fall back on 'market research showed' because I can think of no one that would want to use that rubbish in a production environment.

I also was playing around with NT 3.51 (because I can't get NT 3.1 to install... yet) and it dawned on me: why not go back to the program manager? Hell, the code's there and it's tested. Run with it. It's better than the metro interface that's for sure.

That's exactly what I thought they were doing.

oh that's too good!

I think some of the youngins are thinking, "program what?"

LOL at that picture cityboy-stl

As for Program Manager...um...I still use that almost every day...
It is included with windows (up to 98 where it can be run just as a application)
I could never get it to function correctly in XP though LOL

Found this on reddit and thought I'd share:

I've been running the CP on my main computer for a few months now and I like it. I had some problems at first with setting up my computer with my Microsoft Account. Doing an upgrade from 7 caused some problems, but nothing a little registry hack couldn't fix.

I really like the Metro UI. I've had a Windows Phone since it was released, so I guess I'm kind of biased. I'm also quite the Microsoft fanboy (got the Windows logo tattooed on my back). But running the new Start screen on a regular desktop without any type of touch interface isn't that great. I feel all the gestures and whatnot that they added is aimed specifically at tablets, which is great because I cannot wait to get a Windows 8 tablet. But maybe mouse gestures need to be improved.

One of my favorite new features is the improved dual monitor support. The dual taskbars help a lot, and doesn't require extra software (finally!).

My prediction: This will fall flat on its face.

The best description of this I've heard is that its the reverse of what Microsoft has done for tablets in the past, which is to shove a desktop interface onto a tablet. Now, they're shoving a tablet interface onto a desktop. It just doesn't work.

Seeing the pictures of Win 8 ... and that blocky/cluttery looking interface I can deff say its something i would NOT want

I'll stick with Win XP & 98 for my laptop & main desktop...(& 3.11 for the old desktop that I don't need online access LOL)

I had hoped that they would change from the block/tile format into something different in the transition from the developer preview to the consumer preview. I like the tiles on my Zune and on the Windows phone...but having an entire laptop or desktop based on this is a little....I don't know if it's an attempt at oversimplification and user friendliness or if it's just a bad idea in general.

I wouldn't mind it on my tablet....but...beyond ultra-portable devices...I don't see this working out too well. I just found out about the consumer preview and was going to install it. Until I saw that nothing had really changed with regard to the UI.

Ubuntu is doing something similar with their so-called Unity Desktop. I don't really care for it much. It's a pain to find where anything is on your computer and those big-ass icons are really annoying.

Tell me the colors are able to be customized. (*S*)

I couldn't say. I've deleted the VM already. If not directly changeable through screen settings, I'm sure there's a registry hack or two.

Windows 7 will definitely be the last MS OS I use unless I can find a stable, maintained shell replacement that works the way I like.

No. That would be stupid. The colors identify what you're looking at. On the phone version, it makes sense for them to be monochrome. On a bigger screen, with many more functions, they would need to be color-coded to an app or category so that they're all different.
