The new UI is just absurd. You know, I don't even know where to start with my rant.

Tiles for apps to show their personality? Come the fuck off it. Oh, the weather app can show the temp without having to click on it. So does the fucking widget sitting on my desktop.

Oh, and sliding through active applications? I guess alt+tab was too difficult.

Am I the only one who doesn't think that tablets will replace desktops/laptops?

I wonder if we'll see third-party shell replacements if this becomes standard.

The computer industry, and others, keep dumbing-down their products so people don't have to think or understand what their technology does.

I understand what your saying, I think they are dumbing it down. But, I have to be honest, I kinda (in a wierd unsure way) like it.

That UI is just stupid. It sure doesn't look any easier to me with all those tiles and windows flying all over the place. It appears totally disorganized. It reminds me of the new gnome desktop I got with the latest Ubuntu. I don't know where in the hell anything is. It's flashy alright but does seem very practical. Also, I have this fetish about keeping the screen clean, I do not want to have to touch the screen to do stuff.

Its a great tablet UI but a fucking idiotic UI for anyone that actually wants to get any work done.

Microsoft doesn't get it. With tablets it isn't about skinning an already existing OS to make it look prettier and more tablet-y. Its about using a lightweight OS that has some compromises, but is still powerful, to provide the best experience possible. This is just some pretty skin over a bloated horror-show of an OS. Like all of Microsoft's other tablet efforts, it will fail badly.

Here's what they need to do: Keep Windows on PCs and laptops. Keep Windows Phone on, erm, phones. Come up with Windows Tablet, based on Windows phone, but more extensible and powerful. Keep that pretty UI pictured above.

If they keep trying to do this one size fits all, Windows attempting to be a multiple 'personality' OS, they're going to continue to crash and burn.

Seriously Microsoft, pull your heads out of your asses (hard I know, since Ballmer's head is so fucking huge) and get your shit together! It shouldn't be this fucking hard to do a Windows tablet right!

Obviously, this is the Windows Phone 7 interface pasted over Windows 7.

I read one site which compared Win 8 to Windows 3.0 in the sense that Windows 3.0 wasn't really a new OS - it was just a graphical interface pasted over DOS. Similarly, Win 8 isn't really a new version of Windows - it's a new desktop interface pasted over Windows 7.

I agree that it looks like the new "Unity" interface for Ubuntu as well as Gnome 3 (both of which are equally stupid as desktop interfaces).

My guess is that Microsoft won't be able to resist the push back they will get from this. They will end up either abandoning this interface (except for tablet installations) or they will make the old Win 7 desktop an option.

I agree the new "Unity" interface for Ubuntu is a disaster. I no longer recommend Ubuntu to Linux newbies because of it. It is another attempt to put a tablet OS onto the desktop, and it just doesn't work.

Fortunately, Unity is easy to get rid of (return to Gnome):

1) Log out of Ubuntu 11.04

2) When the login screen appears, select your user id.

3 At the bottom of the screen, a task bar will appear. Click Ubuntu>Ubuntu Classic.

4) Log in with your normal user id and password.

If you ever want Unity back, repeat the steps above, but instead choose Ubuntu>Ubuntu at Step #3. (That's not a typo - "Unity" is confusingly called "Ubuntu" in the popup menu).

What's going on in IT anyway? Microsoft degrades from Windows 7 to 8, Nintendo degrades from the innovative Wii controllers to the Dreamcast-joypad-clone Wii U.

I didn't like Windows 7 at first, but it's grown on me. I like it a lot more than I liked Vista, however, just from the visuals/aesthetics, I am not going to like "Windows 8." The features look promising, but the UI is turning me off completely.

Pray they decide against it. :o

I hate it. I hate the aesthetics & the look most of all. But I hate the dumbed down functionality.

That's the weird part; if you want to run excel or something it switches back to the regular ole Windows 7 skin alongside the new skin.

I seriously cannot believe how fucking stupid Microsoft is being. Windows Phone 7 was a hugely impressive piece of work coming from them; This looks like a steaming pile of horse shit. What's worse is that they don't understanding WHY this approach is going to fail miserably. They don't understand WHY Apple and Google stick with a tablet OS that's based on their Mobile OS instead of something else.

Here's what they need to do: Fire the Windows team. Every single fucking one of them. Replace them with people whose opinions will actually be heard so they can stop these trainwrecks from happening. FIRE BALLMER. He's useless. He's a know-nothing pantload that is a dinosaur in a world where dinosaurs are extinct.

Windows Phone 7 gave me hope for Microsoft. This new Windows 8 tells me that they've learned nothing.

Windows 8 makes me cringe. If this was just for a mobile or even a tablet laptop, I would say sure. At least Microsoft keeps up with their hit/miss streak.

Then again, how many people still actually use IE? Exactly.

I read that someone created a copy of this new GUI for Windows 7 \:/

makes me wish Silverlight was supported in linux... if not for netflix instant, I'd drop Windows entirely in favor of Fedora.

It is. The open source version is called "Moonlight."

For debian systems:

Code:
sudo apt-get install moonlight-plugin-core moonlight-plugin-mozilla

For Fedora, download the plugin and install Moonlight as an extension to Firefox:

I can't vouch for it, as I've never tried it. It's all much ado about nothing. Silverlight has never been popular, and it's about to be replaced by HTML5.

Do you actually have to touch the screen physically for your finger to act like a cursor?

My monitor doesn't like to be touched except with a distilled water and alcohol solution and lint-free cotton material.

I wonder if Microsoft knows about this?
