Hit control-break to exit and do this now.....didn't work.
Pressed ENTER and continued to licence agreement.
If you agree press "Y" and press enter.

Insert high-density diskette in Drive A.
Press ENTER to extract or ESC to exit.

Extraction is complete.
Press "Y" to do another copy.....DIDN"T.
Closed window.

Opened diskette, clicked CLSETUP and it would not open.


Did not try to download second driver (the larger) as I suspect the same scenario.
Tried procedure on another computer running XP SP2 and the black screen would not exit to redirect to another drive...CONTROL-BREAK.

A couple of questions (probably idiotic!)............
Can the contents of the floppy be just copied to C -hard drive and try to install from there?
Is there another way to redirect the download since it doesn't work from the black screen...CONTROL-BREAK?
Should I have tried to install the larger drive first....#2 on the download page?

the first link says it's "disk 2 of 2" so try downloading the larger file (disk 1 of 2) and then run it after you've downloaded it and see what you get with it. i scanned "driverguide.com" for the driver for your video card and it only gives you the larger file so maybe the second file isn't needed.

It also sounds a little like you tried to run the file without saving it to your computer first? if so that might be what some of the problem is about.
1. I would try to download both files to a single folder on your computer, just name it something generic, like "video driver" or something.
2. I would put it in the root directory (so if you went to that folder in DOS [the black window thing) instead of like in your "my documents" folder or something.
3. then make sure the floppy disks you have are ok and are 1.4 MB in size.
4. then exit windows to DOS and go to that folder by typing cd\video driver at the C: prompt (that's assuming you used the name above and that you put it in the root directory).
5. now you should be in the folder you made (should read as c:\video driver) and the files should be in there so just type qb3t17a.exe and press enter and see if that works for you.

that button you mention above probably wont be an option until after the driver is successfully installed.

1. No luck with above suggestions...cannot exit "black window" to redirect file.
This is what DID work, whether good or bad:
-was able to move .exe files to C, but could not extract;
-with no idea what I was doing, I used "drag and drop" to move .exe large file to floppy, where it extracted;
-now I have extracted files on floppy but cannot get them to C ...."drag and drop" won't work.
Suggestions, besides the obvious "give it up"?

A good idea or not? Would it contain any updated drivers?

what files show up on the floppy? you can't copy any of them to your C drive? you might be able to able to use device manager to update/change the driver for the video card that way. i don't have windows 98 anymore and i don't remember if using device manager in windows 98 is similar to the later versions or not, so i don't want to mislead you with a bunch of instructions that don't work.

i've heard mention of that unoffical service pack. i think it's ok. I've seen it on Cnet.com in the forums. you might want to be careful where you download it from though. i think this site is safe: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/Unofficial-Windows-SE-Service-Pack.shtml

Windows 98 or Windows Millennium Edition
1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Display.
3. Click the Settings tab.
4. Click Advanced.
5. On the Adapter tab, click Change.
6. Click Next.
7. Use one of the following methods to locate the installation files for the new video driver.

Method 1: Search for the new driver
a. Click Search for a better driver than the one your device is using now. (Recommended), and then click Next.
b. If the new driver is located on a floppy disk, insert the disk into the floppy disk drive, and then click to select the Floppy disk drives check box.

If the new driver is located on a CD-ROM, insert the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then click to select the CD-ROM drive check box.

To check the Microsoft Windows Update Web site for an updated version of the driver, click to select the Microsoft Windows Update check box.

If you downloaded the video driver to a folder on your hard disk, or if the updated video driver is located in a share on your network, click to select the Specify a location check box, and then type the path to the updated driver in the text box.
c. Click Next.
d. To install the recommended video driver, click The updated driver (Recommended).

To install a different video driver that is compatible with your video adapter, click Install one of the other drivers, click View List, click the video driver that you want to use in the list of video drivers, and then click OK.
Method 2: Specify the location of the new driver
a. Click Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want, and then click Next.
b. In the Models box, click the model name of your video adapter.

To install a different video driver, click Show all hardware, click the appropriate manufacturer in the Manufacturers box, and then click the appropriate model in the Models box.
8. Click Next, and then click Next again.
9. Click Finish.
10. Click Close, and then click Close again.
11. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.

Searching for the new driver (Cirrus Logic) on floppy worked and installed successfully, allowing a change to 32 bit color and a better resolution.
I have one very happy friend who sends his thanks. Though an older computer and OS, it will serve his needs nicely.
Again, my sincere thanks to all who offered their suggestions (especially mike_n_herrin) that lead to this happy day.
Also downloaded 98SE Service Pack that at this point has made some differences in appearance and which I'll explore more closely another day.
