Microsoft has just launched Windows Vista and the next Version of Office. You can get you copy starting tomorrow, january 30.

Let's all say: Thank you, Bill!

I've read the NEW Office version is very different from all previous versions.

It's mostly the new interface featuring the "ribbon". It works great, but you need some time to get the trick and learn where the features are.

And there is a new format for doc-files (docx). It will not be opened by Office for Mac (thank you, MS) and you need a special converter to use it with Office 2003.

That's it

You will need a special converter to be able to use Office Open XML Formats with both Office 2003 and Office 2004 for Mac. The converters for Mac will be out in February as beta software with final coming out around 2 months after the release of Office 2008 (which is supposed to be released the second half of this year). Office 2008 will natively support DocX just as Office 2007 does. Microsoft hasn't left the Mac users out in the cold yet. ;)

Friend who works at Office Depot said he has to go open the store up at 5am so everyone can buy Windows Vista, are people that eager to get this operating system? I'm just going to hang on to Windows XP until Microsoft no longer supports it.

What is the rationale behind that?

Well, like nihilist_legion said, there will be an docx compatible version of office for mac some time this year. If you want to exchange files with mac users for now, you need to save your files as Word 2003 files.

Ok, I'm clearly not the most computer savvy person. But what is Vista? And how much does it cost?

Will Vista likely become standard in future PCs?

Thanks!

the CompUSA here in Austin opened at midnight but only 25 people showed up. They were hoping for long lines.

I'm in no hurry to buy either...right now I'm fine with Office 2003, since I know my school wont be upgrading right away and will probably continue using 2003 for another year or two.
With Vista, I'll just wait until SP2 comes out for it, because we all know it will, and then get a new pc with it preinstalled.

Well I am currently righting this on my new Vista computer and it is beautiful. Once you get through the updates, this thing is beautiful. I have a Acer Aspire with a 64 bit processor and it is beautiful.

Vista itself is wonderful. I still have some things to go through. There isn't much of a learning curve with the new Vista, but some things are radically new. I def. recommend this to anyone.

NOTE: It seems that Vista does a automatic spell check for you. I don't know if this is actually part of the JUB forums or Vista, but it is cool, and annoying at the same time because then I get this nagging want to fix the error.

Also I would like to note that, while I am using my old HP pavillion mx75 monitor, the picture is amazing. this isn't a HD monitor, but i feel like I am looking at HD picture.

OHHH its Firefox that is doing it. Haha, i completely forgot that i was on firefox. i did just download the very latest version.

Well, very interesting. I think what you wanted to say was *Well I am currently writing this*:p

As soon as my free Vista Premium upgrade arrives in the mail, I'm installing it. Looking forward to it too..........

i am glad the people who have it are happy with it. however, i heard on NPR today that no one was really expecting a huge rush for it. apparently there was even less advertising by MS for it. i don't know i don't watch TV much.

i'm rather annoyed that the new office isn't backwards compatible. i think that is stupid. but i guess it's to force everyone who has the older versions to upgrade to the new one. i wont be upgrading to vista or the new office for a long time i think. office upgrade i don't think is worth it. vista would be for the security, except for all the DRM stuff.
