Windows Vista RC 1 (Build 5600) is out. Registered MS Connect Users can download the build right now; we "normal" users have to wait.

I had Build 5536 (Pre-RC1) installed, which is very similar to RC1 and it performed great. Really looking forward to install RC1

yeah ditto. although i will probably wait and buy the final version because i JUST recently reinstalled WinXP x64 edition and i'm not about to go thru all that again...lol.

my roomie has Vista beta2 and it has MAJOR issues. i think he's looking forward to this more than i am.

i have no doubt that vista will be cool. but what i wish is if ms would spend more time on fixing the problems in their existing os, rather than shipping a new version with it's own issue (in addition to any it has left over from the previous versions).

But it will be cool to hear what folks say about RC1, don't know if anyone here will have it though...

Pre-RC1 is a HUGE improvement over Beta 2. Much faster and quite fun to use actually. I might just use that as my primary OS until the final build ships...

Well as long as it is stable and bug free and as frugal with resources as other Microsoft operating systems then I will definately...................Get Linux

Vista's graphic capabilities left me really impressed, but I think it has a major problem. System requirements.

I'm stuck with a 350 MHz Pentium II, with 256 MB of RAM and a really poor 8 MB graphics acceleration card. However, with that piece of junk running Kubuntu GNU/Linux, I'm able to achieve a better look than Vista with its "Aero Standard" user interface, without any performance loss. I'm even able to turn some compositing effects on, such as transparent menus.

So, I think that Vista has many important design flaws, mainly in its GUI. It's known that they had to rewrite Windows NT's presentation engine due to huge performance loss when it was forced to use alpha-blending effects.

I wonder why it requires such a huge amount of RAM (1 GB for Aero Glass) only to run the OS, or most precisely the GUI. I think that the OS should be as light-weighted as possible, so that it leaves most resources free for application programs. But Vista's requirements resemble those from a very new and graphics-intensive game! Considering that Linux achieves the same in low-end computers make me think about really huge memory leaks and/or lots and lots of resident programs (and I mean really lots, Linux already loads dozens)... or another obscure bug.

It's interesting, everytime there is something to report about windows, there is some guy crying:

yeah i was going to say something about that...i guess i think it's kinda rude to jump into a windows thread and say "get linux." this was supposed to be a discussion aoubt RC1. so i don't think it's very fair to say get linux without having saying something about RC1...assuming you've seen it.

i think miaplacidus' post is different from the standard "get linux" post, because he compares the sys requirements for vista vs a linux distro and leaves us with an intresting question.

That's because the new rendering engine is actually fully 3D, whereas XP and previous versions were 2D. That's why Vista can do all the neat window manipulation effects. The other reason for the increased RAM useage is all the new layers of security, like UAC, Windows Defender, etc. But yeah, your box is probably going to have a hard time with it. :|

Thanks T-Rexx. That was basically what my short note was meant to convey. It wasn't meant to be offensive but is based on years of frustration, upgrades, crashes, infections etc.

Well, I actually still prefer OSX (even though, the more I have to work with the Finder, the more I hate it), but I still believe that Vista is a huge improvement over XP.

lonestar,

I'd like to try OS X (all the people I know who has used it has a good impression) but, as it requires a Macintosh to run, I think I'll never have the chance. The guys at Apple did the best thing they could do in 2001 when they switched from the Pascal-based (and very aging) "classic" Mac OS to a much more stable UNIX-based OS.

And about Linux... it runs even faster than Windows 98 in the same computer... and I compared it to a freshly installed Windows, without having even Office or an antivirus installed.

miaplacidus:

You can download the "Lite" version (691 MB) here:
http://www.foxlinux.org/modules/wfdownloads/singlefile.php?cid=1&lid=12

You can download the "Pro" version (3.0 GB) here:
http://www.foxlinux.org/modules/wfdownloads/singlefile.php?cid=1&lid=13

Fair warning: the Fox Linux website is mostly in Italian. You won't have any trouble figuring out where to click to download stuff, though. I believe the Fox Linux OS itself is in English, but I can't swear to that (after all, it's just Fedora Core 4 in disguise!).

Sweet, I'll give it a try. Btw, there is one thing I never understood about linux: how the f*ck do you install a software package?

BREAKING NEWS: Vista RC1 is open for everybody:

Well yeah, the best thing for OS X, is that it just works! And it works because of the Apple Hardware. If the guys at Apple would need to bother with drivers for millions of hardware devices like MS has too, OS X would crash just the same.
