Hello Everyone,

Tell me what do you perfer and why do you like it better or the same as the other Operating systems.

I like all of the operating systems. idk why alot of people are talking trash about Apple. Apple has changed alot and now is really, really user-friendly. Apple can do just about anything Windows can. I mean Apple even has Boot Camp, VMware, and other software to use Windows on an Apple. I just don't understand???

I like ubuntu because I'm poor and ubuntu is free!

I know everyone likes to brag about how they cheat Microsoft and pirate Windows, but I won't do that, so long as a free (or lots cheaper) alternative is available. I'm not a prude, but I have my honor.

I'd probably use a Mac if I could afford one, but they're waaaaaay outta my price range.

Windows is easy and compatible, but Vista ran unbelievably poorly on my laptop when I bought it a year ago. And, at $400, a boxed copy of Vista actually costs more than my laptop did brand new! So it is both majorly expensive and markedly underfunctional. And the "big brother" aspect of WGA drives me crazy.

Ubuntu is probably the least easy of the three to use, but it's the only one that's free, and it is no less powerful than either of the alternatives (which is amazing! - how can they give stuff like that away free?). There is a steep learning curve to Linux, but I've learned to like ubuntu over the past year. I still don't know anywhere near enough, but I like ubuntu well enough now that I probably wouldn't change if you offered me Mac or Windows free (legally free, that is).

I agree, after I used Unbuntu in my CET 2 class in H.S. last semester. I thought it was easy and fun. It's really COOL! Plus its GUI-Based so it much easier 2 use than the old Linux. I ordered it, and just got Ubuntu in the mail a week ago. I hope to install it soon!

^Thanks for that. I installed both of them.

...it's all 686 optimized...

DAMN! I knew you were smart, Orion, but you're even ahead of Intel! (How's that Heisenberg uncertainty compensator coming?). :D

I use Apple. It is elegant, rock solid, and it just works. What else could you want?

Hardware that is up to date and not so expensive.

Apple is a unix kludge that's been doctored to look good - which it does. Under the hood though, it's not so pretty - the file system is a complete disaster. Windows is beyond awful; it's just a complete disgrace. However, Microsoft's marketing is simply brilliant, and people will buy what Microsoft tell them to.

Unix/Linux is the only decent OS available for PC's at the moment; it suffers simply from small user numbers (in comparison to Apple, M$), and so companies are slow to release drivers for hardware components.

(For the record, I'm currently using Suse, but I've tried ubuntu, and lots of other distros, too).

-T.

I just installed ubuntu 8.04 alpha-6, and am posting from it now.

It's still in alpha, but, so far, I've had no trouble with it whatsoever. And DAMN, is it fast! Somehow, each subsequent version of ubuntu seems to get faster than the last. The file system in 8.04 finds things and writes to the disk way faster than in 7.10. And, at last, ubuntu will just ask for the root password when you try to access alien drives with standard user privileges, rather than simply refuse access outright. Moreover, it remembers what you've accessed on previous sessions with appropriate passwords, and automatically grants you re-access to those devices, without re-entering the passwords.

Ubuntu 8.04 is noticably easier to use (at least for newbies like me) and much faster than 7.10 was. I wasn't expecting much improvement from 7.10 to 8.04, but the difference is noticable. The first 8.04 beta is due out later this month, and the final 8.04 is due April 24.

Ooops! !oops!!oops!!oops!

You're right! It's mentioned on the introductory page, but none of the mirrors actually seem to have it!

Sorry about that, mike.

(The torrent site seems to have it, but you need to register with them before they'll let you download it.)

Running from knoppix 5.3 now. I tried KDE 4 and it's ok, but i need to get used to where everything has been moved to. lol if you use kde4 and you need english it's easier than getting english in KDE3
all you have to do is type knoppix lang=us desktop=kde4 then the rest is in english. with kde 3 you still have to change the language settings once you get into knoppix.

knoppix 5.3 comes with fusion instead of beryl like 5.1.1 did.

I mostly use OS X, though I have Fedora and XP installed on my Mac, too. Apple needs to steal virtual terminals from Linux.

OS X isn't a kludge - it's a certified UNIX. I'd actually say it's nicer on the inside than on the outside - the aging file system that Linus Torvalds criticized recently is a bit crufty, but it's on the way out. Apple is expected to replace it in the next major update, either with ZFS or a new homegrown file system. (I'm guessing the latter - I think that's probably why they hired Dominic Giampaolo, the guy behind the BeOS's file system.)
