I am caught between these two OS.
Which one should I choose?
I have pentium 4, 3.0, hd 80 giga, 512 memory.

One problem though, I does not recognize my printer, an old 580 HP, and I do not have money to buy a newer one now!
:(

Did you try going to the HP site and seeing if they have a driver you can download for your printer? Sometimes you luck out.

I checked and they said no updates will be available for Vista, and told me to buy a newer product.

sometimes I hate capitalism.

what model of HP do you have...there might be a work around. you might be able to install the XP drivers and still have it work even if it didn't auto detect it. i think noelie told me to do that with...um my sound card because it didn't work in Vista either, but i installed the XP drivers and it ended up working. Vista home basic doesn't have the aero glass interface that the rest of the vista versions do. so i wouldn't bother with home basic personally.

I have a HO 680C

Do you know how I can install the drivers from XP?

/\ what i did with the sound card, was i went to the manufacturer's web site and downloaded the most recent driver (for me it was either one for XP or they also had one for windows 2000). I tried XP first.

However, i looked on HP's web site and I can't find a driver for your model printer for XP or windows 2000. They say the drivers are already integrated with XP and 2000 and they don't provide them separately. I did find a driver for Windows ME, so i guess you can try that one. it's here: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software3/dj517/dj-28920-1/dj517en.exe

since it's a .exe file you should just be able to double click on it, but I don't think it will work for you. sorry.

If you're determined to use Vista and can't get the drivers to work you should be able to install the printer as a generic one which will still give you basic printing functions (personally I'd do that as I hate HP's crappy software which I find to be a nuisance).

Thanks, I will try and do that right now.
