Here are the possibilities:
A. When you update WMP, it "loses track" of any liscenses to DRM protected files, which means you'll have to either re-enter your password for them, or contact the supplier of the media files for new passes.

B. You upgraded from a version that did not support DRM, to a version that did, and now those DRM protected files you've been playing for free aren't so free any more. In which case u'll have to purchase a liscense for them, or get free copies.

Going back to an older version will probably not help you anymore, you've already added the new DRM system by upgrading.

Why are you still with WMP? And why with an old version? If you were gonna upgrade you should have gone straight to 11. If you're just ripping CDs, try iTunes. It's free, and works a lot better than WMP.

@^^^ Media Player Classic. You can download a better version than the one included in Windows. The downloaded one plays virtually anything. Here ya go!

Like Noelie said keep clear of itunes especially on a pc. I am a mac user now I love it but I hate itunes. Spent hours the other day removing drm from tunes my mate had legitimately downloaded to his ipod from itunes web store via a friends computer. He paid him for them and when he got back to this country found he could not play them on his computer as they were encoded m4p's. His pc can't even run itunes. Well I won't go into the technicalities but it put me in close touch with Itunes and it is truly crap.

You guys are being mean. iTunes isn't crap. At least not for me. It's worked perfectly fine for me. Even the store. I don't think I've ever had issues...something that never happened when I used Windows Media Player 8-11.

I'm trying out MediaMonkey at the moment - it's a brilliant piece of software - it can tag/rename/normalize/add artwork and loads of other stuff.

:gogirl:
I've used MediaMonkey version 2 for years; I don't know how I ever managed my music collection without it. I've also been playing around with the Alpha builds of version 3, which promises to be even better. So far I've only ever used the freeware versions, but they do everything that I want them to.

I can't actually remember the last time I used Windows MediaPlayer; I only use MediaMonkey for music and Jet Audio for vids. As for iTunes; it lasted less than two hours on my system before I decided that it was a heap of bloatware junk.

iTunes is only good for poor to mediocre computer users. For good to expert computer users, iTunes sucks donkey balls and F*cks with your G*ddamn computer so F*cking much.

Just because I'm not some audiophile wanting my music ripped at the highest bitrate known to man does not make me mediocre in any way.

And how does it fuck with your computer? iTunesHelper.exe, and it requires you to install Quicktime. That's the worst of it. You can even block iTunesHelper.exe from launching and it wont affect the program significantly. And at the end of the day if you're really not happy with it you can uninstall it, something other media players wont let you do...ever.

WMP starts much faster here than itunes actually i just tried to see how much faster but accidentaly clicked wmp in my quick launch first and it was already running before i could click on itunes even the other way wmp beats it by 3-4 seconds

which is why i have moved my music all to wmp and will be looking at getting a mp3 player other than an ipod probably a clix2 4gb when released here ..|

I beleive Noelie handled that one for me.

It's funny how life works.

I was transferring some music from my Zen to a friend's laptop last night and he had both WMP11 and iTunes - which one started quicker? WMP11.

Well, I guess that's varies from user to user. iTunes and WMP11 started pretty much at the same time back when I was on Windows. Of course I have no way to prove that now since my old PC is sitting in a dumpster somewhere (I know! I should have recycled it. I'm a horrible person.).

Why had he iTunes installed? Because his sister has an iPod and they couldn't get it to work with any other software. He hates both the iPod and iTunes and he's a 'mediocre' computer user (an unfortunate term).

They couldn't get it to work? Wow. Do you know how many alternatives there are to iTunes that do work with the iPod? Even Real Player works with it. Maybe her iPod not working with other software was an isolated case, or maybe they were just complete idiots. I've had roughly six iPods over the last three years, and all of them have worked with iTunes, Real Player, Anapod, EphPod, Winamp, and Foobar (I've tried a lot. I stuck with iTunes since I felt it gave me the smoothest experience).

iTunes installs a service - WMP11 doesn't. iTunes installs a startup app - WMP11 doesn't. iTunes keeps taking over the file associations every time you use it - WMP11 doesn't. iTunes installs Quicktime - WMP11 doesn't.

You can uninstall iTunes. You can't WMP11. Well, you can roll back to a previous version, but you can never truly get rid of it. Well, I mean you can, but it's a really fucked up process. You can pretty much turn off the iTunes Music Store. As for the file associations, get another program to keep them in check. On second thought, why would you use iTunes if you don't want it to keep all the files associated? I don't get it. It's not like VLC player where you use it to watch porn videos you download, watch, and then delete. iTunes is meant to keep your media library organized. Duh, it's going to keep taking over file associations.

Quicktime installs a startup app and it installs an updater app that runs in the background.

Both those things can be disabled. One through the preferences menu in Quicktime and the other through msconfig or using something like Spybot.

So - if you install iTunes as given to you from the Apple website - you get a new service, two updater apps and two startup apps whereas with WMP11 I get a fairly stable multimedia player that I can tell not to mess with my system and it doesn't.

Look, in the end iPod+iTunes is an ecosystem. It's simple, and it works exactly like it should. I mean, there are a few things that still need to be worked out (.qt/.mov only? Really?), but you're kidding yourself if you think WMP is any better.

But it does affect it does it?

Actually, I was wrong to say it wouldn't affect it significantly. It's non-essential to iTunes.

I'm done.

ok thanks guys i have seen all of your suggestions and will try some. but as for wmp11 dont know maybe i will just see what i can do with my current one but thanks anyway

If you're going to stick to WMP, you really should upgrade to WMP11. It's gorgeous if nothing else. And it works a lot better than all the previous versions. If you don't like it, you can just roll back to 10 (At least you could with the beta. I'm not sure now.). But do try it.

OMG! So that's it! It works fine *IF* you:
Install it correctly
remove the other programs it comes with
use MSCONFIG to disable the startup processes it installs
use MSCONFIG or SPYBOT to turn of the startup processes from othe programs it's installed
Turn off the store part of it
AND get it to sync with your iPod properly

Dude, SIMPLE!
