Yeah, SoundMAX onboard. I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling, reformatting, reinstalling, nothing really helps.

M$ doesn't have its own drivers for it.

You could try nabbing a cheap card from newegg.com. Go for a CMI8738 or a C-Media based PCI card since BestBuy is over rated and a fuckin backstab. Sounds to me like you need a different card because sometimes XP installs something with the same interrupt as a USB device. Hence why a PS2/ mouse and a USB/ mouse cannot be plugged in at the same time and function correctly. I hate XPSP2. But I use it anyways, with the Vista transformation pak>.<

Oh, by the way, Everest reports it as:

Analog Devices AD1888 @ Intel 82801EB ICH5 - AC'97 Audio Controller [A-2/A-3]

Well, I was just toying with the idea of buying a cheap sound card, wondering if it would really help. I could afford one next month - since you mention getting just a cheap one, the one I'd get (at my local computer store) would be this one. I wouldn't mind something even more basic than that, but that's as basic as the store sells.

It seems that a friend has an available sound card (for free), it'll save me some money.

I'm not even going to ask what it is, free is free (it's currently in their server..no server really needs a sound card ;) )

Now if that doesn't solve things, I'll really be in trouble. :p I'll quietly deal with my own sound card issues till I get the card, I think I can hang in there for a couple of weeks.

I checked over several sites and WMI is still broken.
Even a reinstall of Windows won't help, because WMI seems like it was broken before I reinstalled.
