To start off with my sound in integrated into my motherboard which is a AMD Athlon XP 2500+

I have just done a clean installation of XP after having 2000 on my computer.

When I had 2000 the sound would only work after I downloaded the drivers for a C-media AC97 Audio device.

Now I have XP it downloads the driver but I get no sound and the message "this device cannot start (code 10)" in the device properties

I have searched on other forums for similar problems involving the audio drivers and the error message but cannot find any that offer information that I haven't tried myself. The computer is a hand down so I do not have any manuals or disks that might be of use.

I hope this is enough information to help anyone who is kind enough to help me with this problem.

Thank you very much for your time

Chris xx

If you have an Athlon XP 2500, it's a fairly old motherboard.

What is the make/model of your motherboard?

With that info I can assist you.

go to the homepage of your motherboard manufacturer and download the correct driver and install it.

Motherboard Model: Giga-Byte GA-7VM400AM(F)

Motherboard Chipset: VIA VT8378 KM400/KN400 + VT8237(R)

Thats all the info HWiNFO found on my motherboard.

I've tried the gigabyte site with no luck, gonna have a poke around however.

Yeah I tried that link but it wouldn't install, cant remember the error it gave me.

But dont worry, somehow I've killed my computer, installing xp again to see if that brings it back to life but looks doubtful, need a new computer, but until then I have my new (second hand) laptop.

If you're reinstalling XP, do a full reformat. Don't put the disc in while you're running windows, as it won't do a full reinstall, and the problem will most likely not be gone.

Yeah I did do it all myself, not that silly (well I am just not all the time) And yes I do a full format and reinstall. Sound is working now, but only cos I bought a sound card for the thing hehe.

Had a customers computer in today with this exact problem (C-Media). It was a brand new install and nothing would get it working, I think it may have been a Windows update that fucked it...

And we did the same as you, stuck in a second hand sound card we had lying around.
