Wisdom teeth (ARGH!!)

Okay so all but one of my four wisdom teeth have come through fine, with hardly any pain whatsoever. That last one however is starting to hurt like a bitch every now and then. I know it's trying to come through as I can almost see it popping through the gum (sorry) but I wondered if it was safe to just leave it coming through. Does anyone have any experiance of wisdom teeth? What did you do?
 
I had all 4 out at the same time.......I was asleep thank goodness. Only problem I had was that the stiches broke when I was eating curry.....pain!
 
Well hearing all of you guys sharing these terrible memories of painfull wisdom teeth ... I'm scared now !!! All 4 of them have to come out yet !!!
 
The thing is i've let curiosity get the better of me and I looked up "wisdom tooth removal" on youtube. Not a pretty sight I can tell you :eek: . Now i'm too scared to even think about getting them romoved. Maybe now i'll just let the last one come through and if it's not causing me any pain it's staying in there!

You are lucky that you had room for them to come in. Mine came in my early twenties. I do remember them hurting as they came through. There is a product called anbesol that can really help a lot in relieving the pain. It is actually for toothaches, but it contains an analgesic that will make the area numb for a short time. That may make you more comfortable.

Another thing that you may run into is that for a lot of people the enamel is not as thick on wisdom teeth and they are more at risk for cavities! The good news is that dentists are now able to seal the surface to reduce that risk, dramatically! That involves absolutely no pain and may make it possible to keep them the rest of your life.

What you really need to do is see a dentist as soon as you can! If money is an object, you will find that there are usually dentists that will work with you on that. Office calls are usually not that expensive, anyway! Then you will have all the information you need to go from there!

I have a friend who was a dental hygenist for years. I remember her saying how many kids they had in their practice that had all of their teeth, including their wisdom teeth., with absolutely no cavities for their entire lives because of the surface bonding! It would be nice to have that and not the expense, inconvenience and pain involved in having to have work done, later!
 
I had all 4 of mine removed last year. There was a lot of pain and it seemed to ease up everyday afterward. The pain medication was awesome! The bottom ones came in sideways and were pushing on all of my bottom teeth. That pain was worse than after the surgery.
 
Thank's for all of your advice guys. I guess I have been quite lucky in that the rest of my wisdom teeth have come through okay. I keep putting off going to the dentist because i'm a coward when it comes to pain. Argh! ](*,)
 
Just because you hear a number of other people talking about the pain they endured doesn't mean your experience will be the same. Only you know your tolerance for pain.

I had all four of mine removed while under, and it wasn't any worse than having a cavity filled. The worse part was when I started coming out of the numbing agent -the tingling drove me crazy. I took one pain pill the entire time -and that was simply because I didn't want to deal with my family who insisted they had to come up and take care of me.

I just had all four of mine taken out. I was in hospital and put to sleep. I was told so many horror stories but the reality really isn't that bad, don't worry!

After you feel a bit drowsy obviously, but just rest up for a few days, stock up on liquid food (this was the worst bit!), and take it easy. I can't reccomend enough putting ice packs on as soon as you leave the hospital. 20 minutes on, 20 off. This will greatly reduce the swelling. Don't smoke, or suck on straws (or anything else!) as this can cause dry socket which is extremely painful! Day 2-3 is when the pain will be at it's most but due to the pain pills it's more of a dull ache which is easily ingnored.

I had 4 took out at the same time, just 10 mins.........no problem at all and dont worry.
 
I still have all 4 wisdom teeth. My orthodontist said I had plenty of room for them and I should let them grow in. By the time I was 22 they were all in, except for one that just sat there, halfway grown in. When I was about 33 or 34, some hormone went surging through my body that caused that one to finish growing. It was extremely painful, since it shoved around all the teeth that had been firmly set in place for the past 10-odd years, but it closed in a bunch of the gaps between my teeth.

Anbesol is helpful for the pain. Tylenol did nothing, but a coworker told me that her dentist told her that ibuprophen is best for mouth pain. It worked like a charm.
 
It's funny but the pain in this last one keeps coming and going to the extent where I sometimes forget about it even being there. Then all of a sudden i'll wake up and find my jaw in agony and it can be like that for the rest of the day if I take no painkillers. When I put my finger over the gum where it's coming through it kind of moves, like it's coming away from the tooth so I have to take extra care when brushing. Right now it's a pain free day so I guess it's decided to stay down for a while longer. :confused:
