But it appears that the mistimed exit sequence for Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch has been erased. In the original movie, when it was time for the Wicked Witch to leave the "exit sequence" setup on the MGM soundstage was activated before Margaret Hamilton had reached the floor mark for the stage elevator. The sequence was: emit smoke, elevator descends, plume of fire erupts, the Witch is gone.
The premature activation of the disappearance sequence resulted in Margaret Hamilton being in the range of the flame throwers on her elevator decent. As a result, Margaret Hamilton's green copper makeup caught fire and the burning copper was burning through her skin. Quick action by the stage director and the stage staff saved Margaret Hamilton's life as she was rushed to receive medical aid.
