There's visual distortion, of course, and small edits.

But it appears that the mistimed exit sequence for Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch has been erased. In the original movie, when it was time for the Wicked Witch to leave the "exit sequence" setup on the MGM soundstage was activated before Margaret Hamilton had reached the floor mark for the stage elevator. The sequence was: emit smoke, elevator descends, plume of fire erupts, the Witch is gone.

The premature activation of the disappearance sequence resulted in Margaret Hamilton being in the range of the flame throwers on her elevator decent. As a result, Margaret Hamilton's green copper makeup caught fire and the burning copper was burning through her skin. Quick action by the stage director and the stage staff saved Margaret Hamilton's life as she was rushed to receive medical aid.


To my eyes it looks like the "mistiming" has been edited for the Sphere version. See if you agree:

I agree about the timing. I don't think like this version. It looks too "cartoony".

By "small edits" I assume you mean cuts. They cut quite a bit out of this scene.

I'm not seeing seamless transitions with all the new scenes on my monitor, but that could be an issue with YouTube playback on my computer.

If people are reeling at the cost of tickets to watch millionaires scramble a puck around and most people will need Go Fund Me's to see a remastered movie with 30 minutes cut from run time....I honestly don't see this as economically sustainable.

Around 2013-14 they released a restored version in iMAX 3D with remastered sound in theatres. That was truly awesome. Nothing was cut and no content altered. It was a fantastic presentation. I would love to see that again.

I'm still Not sold on the Sphere as a movie theater. The changes made to convention movies to make them fit inside the Sphere adds an exaggerated perspective.

Movies, even iMAX versions, have an intimacy with the audience that adds to the drama. To get "close in" with the action enhances the story, that's why framing the shot is so important.
The Sphere adds too much scenery and everything is too sharp, especially landscapes far away.

The Sphere is not the future, the venue is too expensive to become commonplace. I'll stick to old fashioned theaters with yesterday's technology.

They claimed that Cinerama Domes with their 145 degree curved screens would be the future of film - but it was a total failure.

I have been to screenings at the dome - if you are in the right area of seats it is immersive and impressive. If you are off to one of the sides you are going to come out feeling like you just watched a movie wearing someone else's eye glasses. And if any of the 3 projectors are off by even a frame or two it messes everything up.

I see that the Sphere only uses certain seats for movies - but I wonder how long before they start expanding that to get more revenue.

However for the moment the uniqueness is still drawing them in and the Sphere is looking for other films to modify for the them to run.

A lot of money and talent was invested to renovate the 1939 film and remove the graininess seen in higher resolutions.
But fixing the movie for Sphere duty shouldn't result in everything being redone.

The image projection of "the Great and Powerful Oz" just needed remastering, not a revision.

Advanced sales have filled the Sphere books through the end of the year. Oz has finally put the Las Vegas Sphere into the profit column. $$$
