Anyone who is really into news isn't relying on a magazine that is a week out of date by the time you get it. Time is for slow people who like to think they're smart. In America, anyway. So, no wonder we get the dumbed down covers.

Localized editions of Time Magazine are being sold O_o?

Didn't know that.

anti-American magazine covers wouldn't help sell issues in the US? I'm shocked.

None of these covers are "anti-American." That they could even be vaguely considered such is a sad testament to the creep of Faux News mentality.

countrys MAGs alls full a shit ans when da folk make da shit grow up world ova

TIME waitin fa eons ya get ya shit out head ans do somethang usefull

man oh man

Holy Shit. You mean companies use marketing. Fuck I knew I was missing something......

al'jazeera english and the BBC are both pretty great.

I second this.

Usually when driving home from a night-shift BBC world news is on the AM band. Usually some good reporting, though much of it lately has been on the social uprisings in the middle east and china with some secondary stories on the progress in Japan.

Occasionally I will listen to local talkback radio because it is a great source of amusing biased chatter about the government controlling us. But usually it will be 5-10 minutes and I'll be pissed off enough about the knob behind the microphone that I switch back to BBC or music.

Hah, good point.

I'd bet a lot on the "Sea of Debt" cover being chosen over that panic-monkey election one.

True. Though with all the Republican efforts to make it harder for at least five million citizens to vote, I'm not sure which one is more relevant.

The darker set of colors isn't going to attract eyes at the newsstand, tho.

How is "Travels Through Islam" anti-American? I get the whole story on debt and war not being so popular with audiences -- but Islam?

Surely, racism has nothing to do with it.

***

I just found the whole thing funny. I mean, my country is too authoritarian to even have more than one news corporation. So I understand if they pull shit like this. But America? I think it's a little sad. I like America.

Its the US, Time magazine is trying to appeal to a broad audience. You can't deny that Muslims face a hard audience in the US, what is going to sell better there, a cover with Islam featured, or something random.

Actually, the main point here is that there are people willing to buy an A4-sized picture of Glenn Beck's face. That is very disturbing to know.

Maybe it's because his has this weird anus-mouth pose going. I don't know much of Glen Beck but I'm sure there is the ability for some rhetoric about him spewing sh*t.

Well thanks a lot mate. Now, I can't un-see it!

American Exceptionalism is a kind of stupidity. The American press is all run by huge corporate interests and enforces this stupid idea. These Time covers just show it for what it is.

That's disturbing? Maybe .. surprising? Nope. Hey .. that's from a country where most of the presidential candidates are beyond stupid and promote stupidity. You would think nobody can take them serious, yet the US media grooms them like nothing else. How do you expect people like Beck not being popular, too? The question is whether he is the cause or the outfall from the other. Mass media focuses on distraction and only partially on the main issues.

Why are people writing things in this thread that make it sound like the government has chosen these covers to keep us dumb and unaware?

This is a private company running a business. They are free to do what they please. As someone has pointed out and all of you ignored. The content on the inside is the same, just the cover is different.

If Time is tryng to appeal to a larger audience in the US by changing covers, then it is probably a good idea. Seeing how once an American picks up the magazine, they will run accross the article regardless and probably read it if interested.

There is no lack on journalistic integrity, hell, if the content on the inside is the same, what is lacking? A unified would vision of a cover intended to catch the eye and sell magazines for profit?
