Women MUST have control over their own bodies!

Ricki Lake, talk show host, is being attacked by the AMA (American Medical Association) for having her last baby at home.

They claim that having a baby at home is NOT safe for the Mother or the baby!

I think women "should" have the freedom of choice about birthing, just like in abortion.....
"IF" a woman is having a "normal" pre-natal situation, without known complications, why should they not have a choice to have their child at home vs in the confines of a hospital?

Sure, they can still have either a mid-wife/Doctor present and be ready to shift to a hospital "should" un-for-seen crisis' arise and then they can go to a hospital......."IF" needed.

I think the AMA is really trying to add to their money coffers by almost insisting that women birth their babies in a hospital environment vs home delivery....

Just like the abortion issue, women are being criticized for taking control over their own bodies and having a "say-so" concerning a "natural" delivery vs a drug-induced delivery...

I am curious about our women members; but also about our very caring GLBT members as well....????(*8*)

I must say that I would bang the hell outta Ricki Lake if given the chance, she's hot as hell.

And the bad thing about birthing at home is that if complications come up, you are nowhere near the hospital to get treated. Basically, you are screwed.

Re: Women "MUST" have control over their own bodie

Well, births have been happening in hospitals since the dawning of time, who would ever want to go without a doctor?!

Re: Women "MUST" have control over their own bodie

My Grandmother was an RN in New York. She gave birth to my dad and his sister at home. She didn't care much for hospitals....

Re: Women "MUST" have control over their own bodie

Sometimes life comes with risks.

What does the AMA say to the parents of a dead baby born in the hospital when things didn't work out as planned.

That happens too.

I think that half the problems we have today start with the medicalizing of birth and risk aversion.

I can only iassume it is a backward step in evolution.

Re: Women "MUST" have control over their own bodie

Because of the fact that we have "evolved" in having competent hospitals (serious tongue in cheek there) to deliver babies, it doesn't make sense to do things "the old fashioned way" by having a baby at home....so thinks the AMA.

Women and babies still die in hospitals, despite being surrounded by all the technology and doctors.

It's just a bunch of modernists having a prob with non-modernistic options. ](*,)

Rikki Lake should tell the AMA to kiss her ass.

This isn't true. Midwives are trained for emergencies and will make sure that they can get the mother and child to a hospital, if needed.

Re: Women "MUST" have control over their own bodie

That's one of the silliest things I've ever heard. Granted, I personally (if I were a woman) would rather be in a hospital, because that's where they have the painkillers. But if you don't want the drugs, and you are reasonably sure that there's nothing wrong with the baby (I mean, isn't that what sonograms are for?) I don't see why you can't have the baby wherever you want. What can a doctor do that a midwife can't?

Sounds a lot like the middle ages when doctors tried to get rid of all the midwives by denouncing them as witches.

Not true. According to factmonster.com, Jimmy Carter was the very first U.S. president to be born in hospital.

The Question:

Who was the first U.S. president to be born in a hospital?
The Answer:

James Earl "Jimmy" Carter, our 39th president, was born at the Wise Clinic in Plains, Ga. on October 1, 1924, making him the first U.S. president to be born in a hospital.

I'm not really sure whether you didn't know that i was being sarcastic or you just wanted to post that piece of trivia...

How do they think woman had babies before hospitals? Seriously dumb people I swear.

Re: Women "MUST" have control over their own bodie

1. Women's control over their own bodies should start at sexual intercourse (or avoiding it), and continue right on.

2. The AMA is really a government-sponsored monopoly that considers itself to have godlike attributes. High healthcare costs can be laid at their feet, because they ration the number of doctors. Their arrogance alone is a good reason for a competing medical-certification body to be formed.

In my haste, the irony went right past me...oh well...c'est la vie...

Sometimes I engage my mouth (or my fingers) before putting the brain in gear...

Re: Women "MUST" have control over their own bodie

I do "wish" that more of our female members would "wade-in" on their ideas of home-birthin

......that is, with pre-natal Doc visits all through out the pregnancy up until the birth and "if" there is no indication of complexities, then why not have the child where you feel more comfortable, in the confines of your home with your birthing mid-wife, coach, etc and completely normally...???

We ALL know that the actual birth does NOT take place really quickly on the first and second births (usually), so if any type of distress is noticed, the pregnant mom can be transported to a fully-functional hospital to care for the emergency!

More thoughts............please?(*8*)

Re: Women "MUST" have control over their own bodie

Unfortunately i am stricken with polycystic ovaries so the risk of miscarriage is quite high so if by a miracle i got pregnant it would have to be a hospital birth in case complications arise.

Re: Women "MUST" have control over their own bodie

Come now, children, let's be serious:

1. Births were conducted in the wilds without hospitals since the dawn of time.
2. So were minor and major procedures like applying leeches, and drilling into the skull to release evil spirits, and dentistry.

Would you let some arb guy without the necessary tools/hygiene/skill/equipment open your skull up at home unless it was absolutely necessary? Would you let one of your school mates give you a root canal during lunch break?

No?

Hospitals exist now, and doctors and technology are better than they ever were and improve all the time. Babies should be born in a hospital/maternity home where everything is anticipated and very little can come as a surprise. Really, if a woman wants to do everything the "natural" way with no hospitals involved, she should have a surprise delivery on the back seat of a bus in rush hour, like you read in the tabloids. Otherwise if you can get to the right place, get to the right place.

Re: Women "MUST" have control over their own bodie

Unclean, that the AMA rations the number of doctors is a matter of record:

All new medical schools have to be approved by the AMA.
The number of students who can be accepted at any medical school is set by the AMA.

Thus, the AMA determines the number of people permitted to study to be doctors.

my hot dog has a first name, its F-A-S-C-I-S-M.

Come now Fascism just isn’t Fascism without the jingoism. Ordering people around is a fine tradition in all kinds of governments. Fascist, so misunderstood.

Citation please?

Are you parked illegally?

Seriously, I can’t believe this is even an argument. It wouldn’t be either without the cult of the baby. Babies can do no wrong, babies must be protected from the godless, babies must be deified, and nothing can impede the almighty march of the baby!!!! The idea that society becomes baby by proxy before birth and as a consequence society’s choice trumps the mother is silly.

I humbly suggest that if Rikki wants to take that chance, it’s her life, child, and something she’ll have to live with if it goes wrong. If it does we’ll all be very sad for her.
