I saw it today. It seems likely that having had a female director gave the film its sense of unfolding wonder in the form of Wonder Woman. Nothing was rushed. Indeed, some people might complain that the beginning is "slow," and they'd be right. But give it 20 minutes or so, and it picks up and just keeps going. And it's got some pretty humorous moments, with several lines Diana utters and the entire audience laughs out loud (mostly when Diana is informing Steve Trevor about what she understands about human biology). And, it has the special effects, but only really cool ones like in the trailer - deflecting bullets. And that's one of the more minor ones. Great special effects without overpowering the scene at all. It's more like a movie about awakenings (mostly Diana's), which also happens to have some action scenes, rather than a "superhero" movie, which is all flash and glitter.
DC finally hit one out of the park. Wonder Woman is their first superhero out of the Big (DC) Three (Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman) to come across as 1), not the result of some tragedy that happened in childhood (hers was not only ideal, but idyllic), 2), Not angry at the world or afraid of it and 3), a Magical Being (she IS a product of magical origins).
This will make Gal Gadot a superstar, similar to Emma Watson in Beauty & the Beast. We have TWO female Heroines, one of whom is super-powered, and the year's only half over!
