Working Class Hero

know ones gonna comment on if they like the video or not? good cover of john lennon's famous song

omg I love this video! I watched the premier of it on MUCH. Great song. Great cover. Great application.

I like Green Day and they have been consistent with every one of their albums. I have followed them throughout most of their career. That said I don't like this cover. Its a bit un necessary really. In my opinion no one should attempt to cover Lennon. NO ONE. It's just something I feel is sacred regarding Lennon songs and they should not be duplicated by bands. Also Green Day are going a bit over the top on the anti war rhetoric lately. I should note that Marilyn Manson already did a similar sounding cover of this back in 2000.

Actually, this cover had nothing to do with war. They did this cover to support Amnesty International and the UN in their efforts to end the genocide in the Darfur region in Sudan. I personally like the cover, and I think it was tasteful to allow Lennon to finish off the very last part of the song.

My comment on the war was toward Green Day themselves not this song. I know it is for the Amensty International comp. cd put together. This song still is unnesseary even for that cause.

I think it is necessary. Lennon was very much for peace and ending hate and injustice, and I think his songs fit perfectly for what Amnesty International is trying to do. I think the song fits very well with what is going on in Darfur. It may not have had that meaning originally, but now its meaning can be used to draw light to what the people in Darfur are going through.

I know what Lennon stood for. I agree that some of the lyrics taken at face value can apply this this situation, although I‘m sure Lennon was speaking metaphorically with these words . This is just another attempt by Green Day to tie in their newly found overtly political agenda with covering a politically charged song. This is what is somewhat bothering me. I see that Green Day played this song to an american idol crowd. What is the point in that? Find a better place to raise awareness for this swept under the carpet issue. That demographic is not going to listen nor comprehend this issue. The UN is very, very late in trying to tackle this issue. This conflict has been going on for FOUR YEARS now. No comp cd is going to raise very much awareness for the demographic buying it. They just want the music.

I doubt this is Green Day's attempt to further "bring down the Bush White House" they were asked to sing it for Amnesty International and they agreed. Remember they did that little duet with U2 to raise money for Katrina victims. The American Idol crowd is the perfect crowd to sing the song at. Sure half of them wont comprehend what the fuck they are trying to get across, but American Idol is one of the most widely watched shows on television. Millions upon Millions of people watch the finally show (not including me).

I knew you would use the AI viewer numbers against me. As I stated that demographic could care less about world events that are not directly effecting them unfortunately. I mean they had a fund raiser type show one week. But really the only reason the viewers donated is because it was shoved down their throats for weeks before the phone lines were open for donations. There was no mention of the events in Darfur when Green Day played this song, therefore it fell on deaf ears.

That is true. I am sure the large majority of the AI viewers didn't get the message that Green Day was trying to get across from singing the song, but there is always a small percentage (and seeing how many people watch the show, thats a lot of people) who would be informed of why Green Day covered the song and would be interested with the crisis in Darfur. Even if you only reach a small group of people, it is still worth it. The more people who know and try to help, the better. It doesn't matter if the rest of them didn't get it.

You should count young people out so quickly (your a young person to). While many adults believe that kids today are mostly selfish, dumb, self-absorb pricks who could care less about the rest of the world. There are a few (more like alot) of teenagers and young adults out there helping to make the world a better place. Although, I guess you wouldnt really find a lot of those type of young adults and teenagers watching AI, but I bet there were a few who did.
