Working on truck engine as a hobby

LOL @ $300 total

You need to include the cost of the garage/heated and lighted workspace. Not everyone has access to such that won't disrupt daily life.

Then there are tools - particularly specialty tools - a good torque wrench can easily cost more than $300. Few people will buy and then store these things for just one project.

If you want to compare the cost of your time and equipment to that of service garage's you'll have to consider everything involved start to finish. And don't forget education that for the professionals amounts to a lot more than a few YouTube videos. LOL

You're absolutely right, of course.

I already own thousands of dollars worth of tools because of my business. My garage is there whether I'm working on my truck or not. My income is almost completely passive, so I didn't really take any time off of work. Between my ryobi and dewalt sets, I pretty much have everything I need. But again, I own a business that needed these tools anyway.

Without all the tools and other things I already have, it would definitely have taken $5k+ worth of tools, time, and hardware to make this project happen.

The auto parts stores like Autozone & Oreilly have a selection of tools that you can 'check out' then use & return instead of needing to buy something you'll probably only use once.
Cost is "free" - you have to put down a deposit, but get that back when you return the tool.

I would hate to have to use library tools. My tools are a personal thing that I've had for years and grown fond of. It'd be like borrowing someone elses toothbrush and Dildo

I completely agree. All my tools are mine. I don't like the idea of buying a tool only to return it after using it.
