Anybody here ever have an umbillical hernia ? Mines about the size of an orange. i have had it a couple years now and i'm about to have it repaired. It's gotten more apparent lately since i've lost 56lbs over the last 5 to 6 months. I'm really curious to know exactly what kind of exercise regimen i can get on once it's repaired because i havn't been able to do much since i've had it and i want to get back into shape. I'm afraid i'll have everyone advising me against it and i know i'll have to take it slow and be careful. I already have a bad back but i always thought exercise could only be beneficial at least it was when trying to overcome that problem. Just wondering what you guys thoughts on this is.

YOu should ba able to do just about eveything except squats, heavy lifting. After your all healed it should all be fine.

My honey had a lower inguinial hernia and was fine after 6-8 months and did everything after.

1 warning though, watch your sneezing w/in the first week, it's a killer

aside from normal aches and pains from surgery you should be fine. But always remember to lift right and really just be safe and watch what your doing..

Thanks for the advice i can't tell you how anxious i am to have this thing corrected and to see that bump disappear once and for all. It's been a very humbling experience to have to walk around with something that was so apparent.

Usually after a hernia repair, you'll be on short-term restrictions- like no situps, no bearing down and no heavy lifting. And you'll have to learn new ways of doing things like getting out of bed or moving from sitting to standing.

But those are temporary. The point of the surgery is to be able to return to normal activity, so you should be able to workout and lift weights once your surgical site has healed.

There are some variations that depend on how the defect is repaired and whether they use a graft.

Your surgeon should go over this with you. If he doesn't volunteer the information, ask him before you have your surgery so that you can plan accordingly.

I had a inguinal hernia and an umbilical hernia repaired in April. The surgery for the inguinal (the side of the groin) was laparoscopic, the umbilical hernia was repaired traditionally. I was on a 5lb restriction for the first 2 weeks, then a 25lb restriction for the next 4. Within a couple days I was moving around pretty good.

I develop a hematoma in my scrotum that was pretty painful after a week, but I was back to normal after another week and back to work as usual. It's rare for that to happen so don't worry about it.

Actually my umbilical repair didn't bother me at all after the surgery and I wish I wouldn't have waited so long to have it done.

Listen to your doctor and there wont be any problems. Good Luck!

If you don't mind me asking ,How long did you have your Umbilical hernia before having it repaired ? Mines been around a couple of years now. And Thanks so very much to you and everyone for the advice.

Hey sorry it took me so long to answer, I didn't see your response.

I had it for a couple years. It was pretty small compared to most others I've seen and didn't really hurt. I really only had it repaired because of the other surgery. The inguinal hernia hurt like hell all the time.
