OH MY GOD

I had to make this thread, because I have just been in bed with Hugh Laurie (i.e, watching House) when a HAUGGEEEE wasp flew through my open window and proceeded to scare the living hell out of me by landing on my quilt cover and pillows whilst I cowered against the wall in fear :help:. I can take spiders, snakes, even cockroaches to some extent. But what I simply CANNOT stand are wasps, bees or moths. Urgh, just thinking about them makes me shiver

So really, what I'm asking is, what's your worst fear in creepy-crawly land?

P.s, I (rather unwillingly) sprayed enough deodorant on it to gas an elephant (and myself)(I can taste it) let alone the poor wasp. Feels bad but ... I was scared. Sorry mother nature!!

Okay, ANY bug scares me. Except ants, flies and mosquitos

OMFG this is just what I had in-mind when I saw the thread title.

I have no problem with bugs, spiders, etc.

But the critter pictured comes out of the wood work in the summer. When I see them I just wanna jump up on the chair and scream.

I just got rid of the strangest spider that I've ever seen in my mom's room. It had extremely long legs, that were rather thick...bleh.

I actually don't kill spiders unless they are particularly large. Aside from butterflies, the dragonfly, and lady bugs, I dislike insects that fly.

The insect that makes my flesh crawl the most is the cicada. I had never seen one in the wild until last year when they came out.

What's crazy is how loud they are. We didn't even realize that we were hearing insects until I tied the two together and pulled up their call online :|...

I've just Googled 'cicada' and they look monstrous!! Thank god I don't live in Latin America!!

you was very brave

pointin finger at um not alway work

anyway ya was very brave :-)

I can't think of any insects that send me scurrying in fear, and I've even picked up a cicada before and walked around with it resting on my hand.

Last summer, very much to my surprise, I walked right up to a dragonfly which was resting on the side of my car, I reached out slowly to it, and it stayed there and let me pet it for about a minute. Certainly one of my most surprising critter encounters ever.

But, whatever those big beetles with fearsome pincers are called...I guess those give me the creeps.

Insects which are simply annoying and obnoxious, on the other hand, are a different and more notable category. In that category, I think I dislike the biting black flies most of all, but those mostly appear north of about 45 degrees North Latitude and not here.

Bees and wasps, if you don't anger or scare them, usually won't sting.

They're actually quite tasty!

I've got these ugly things in my garden. They're a New Zealand Weta, the giant ones being the heaviest insects in the world, apparently.

I don't think I mind any insects, although I find it hard to love mosquitoes.

Cicadas are terrific - they're great to catch and hold; something about their wonderful solidity is very pleasant. We used to breed stick insects; I have a photo somewhere of a huge stick insect crawling over my face. It tickled.

The centipede pictured above is a "house centipede" or scutigerid, all of which I believe are harmless. There are some harmful tropical centipedes; there's a famous video from a David Attenborough series (which you can find on youtube) about a giant centipede which dangles inside caves and catches bats as they flitter past.

I was at one guy's house...he lives literally out in the middle of the woods down in South Georgia, and he had this monstrous beetle hanging from his porch light. He said that it was some sort of rhinoceros beetle...easily one of the largest insects that I have ever seen. It had very large horns that had what appeared to be spikes on them.

Now, you see, I've picked up one of those beetles when I was in Spain. I didn't mind because, it moved incredibly slowly, so you could keep an eye on what it was doing. NOT LIKE WASPS!!! And plus, because it was so big, i could see what I was holding on to ...

But that's what you told me to do when they bite my niece.

As for me, I'm most afraid of the stinging insects because I react very poorly to yellowjacket stings, and I imagine other wasp and bee stings would cause some pretty nasty swelling and heart palpitations as well.

Lol ... Australia are fortunate enough to not have them. They're native to New Zealand. Fortunately they're not poisonous (they just look ugly), like Oz snakes. We don't have any snakes here.

Cockroaches. They can drive me to tears.

I was pooping once in a squatter-style toilet in rural Thailand. A horned beetle the size of a small lemon appeared out of nowhere and began lumbering toward my dangling bits. I felt vulnerable, but not honestly scared. We each went about our business and I haven't seen such a wonderful insect since.

I'm not really afraid of bugs. However, I know that in ancient Mesopotamia they were used as a torture. The victim was force-fed milk and honey until digestion was upset, then they were placed in a canoe with openings for the head, hands and feet. The canoe was set afloat a stillwater pond and the resulting feast of shit, honey and live flesh served to feed a host of breeding, burrowing and biting insects.

I really hate fleas and mosquitoes.
