If Madonna was the singer who sang a song with Justin Timberlake instead of Janet Jackson. If Madonna would have been the one showing her breast the same way Janet did. Would she have been blacklisted and be punished the same way as Janet was? Would her songs stop playing on the radio ? Would her music videos stop playing on MTV ? Would her Confession On The Dancefloor album been a flop? All Janet Jackson albums floped after her superbowl drama. Since then, Janet Jackson was never able to regain her success from her previous albums. All For You is her last hit album. Conservatives are the ones who made sure that Janet would have her career derailed. Liberals didnt care about the brief exposed breast. Would Madonna been punished the say way as Janet ? If not, then why Madonna would get away with it and not Janet?

I always though that Janet Jackson should have been the singer invited to sing at 2024 superbowl. It would have been 20 years since the controversy. She could have performed a medley of her song and redeem herself. I'm sure that she would have had a stending ovation and it would have been emotional. She didnt deserved to go through all this mess. Just for a one second thing. You can imagine what it could have been if Janet was the surprise mystery performer in 2024. It would have been grounbreaking. The fact that the superbowl didnt invited her in 2024 shows that they are still bitter at Janet and they sticks to the conservatives side. They are cowards. It would have been the right opportunity for Janet to redeem and free herself from that bad chapter of her life. Its sad to see how irrelevant Janet become.

Good question. One could say Madonna has been much more provocative than Janet throughout her career, but not on a "family friendly" stage like the Super Bowl. One thing is for sure: Janet's legacy has been largely and cruelly erased thanks to the blacklisting campaign led by former CBS boss Les Moonves. He went out of his way to destroy her career for not bowing to him and kissing his ass, but karma got him in the end. I am happy to see the younger generation learning about Janet through Tiktok challenges, but her name should still be up there with her fellow icons/legends.

If I were Janet, I'd never perform on the Super Bowl again. Fuck 'em.

There are echoes here of what happened to Nina Simone and Eartha Kitt. Like Janet, they were highly talented singers who spoke out about right and wrong and were punished for that. You can get away with it if you are male and white, not so much for black women. The on stage accident was just that, an accident but she was already an easy target for a slimy white man who became another Inspector Javert. Unfortunately this one did not jump in the river.

People keep forgetting she wasn't blacklisted for the exposed breast, she was blacklisted because she's a black woman who didn't bow down, kiss a white sexual predator's feet and beg for his forgiveness and mercy.

AmeriKKKa gonna AmeriKKKa.

Hard to empathize though, I deeply loathe culture vultures like Timberlake. What she ordered is exactly what she got and I hope it was worth it.

Janet being dragged and effectively erased after the Super Bowl says more about misogyny than morality. One moment was enough for the industry to turn its back on a woman who had already proven her talent, influence, and longevity. She didn’t suddenly become “irrelevant”. She was made irrelevant by gatekeepers who decided she was expendable.

Women are still treated as disposable once they step outside the narrow lines of “acceptable” behavior. A fucking Justin Timberlake, who was equally involved, didn’t suffer comparable professional consequences. He walked away with awards, opportunities and a boosted career while Janet absorbed the shame alone. It feels deeply unfair how that episode was handled.

The gag is she was a star before Timberqueen could drive. Threw it all away to work with the mediocre blue eyed help smh. These videos of him doing dad tiktok dances except onstage are horrendous perhaps visually offensive?? 👀

Justin conceded. He threw Janet under the bus without hesitation because black culture isn't his lifestyle it was a hoodie he wore when it was fashionable and removed when it became inconvenient. Like all culture vultures, blackness isn't the end goal, just a launching pad to elite white spaces.

I wouldn't say conceded...he ran and hid like a spineless wuss. He went to zero in my estimation, not that he was that high in it to start with.

I have to temper myself when I talk about Justine, the MA audience version of my comment would've gotten me a timeout. 😭 Your verbiage was pretty colorful and apt. He is the vapid self-important Hollywood cliche, spineless is a compliment compared to what I call him uncensored.

Anywho per Janet I was just talking about this in a BHM thread, the old school artists had some pretty rigid boundaries and weren't so quick to sell out, least not til they were decades in and balls deep in the industry but those are legacy artists they can do that. Aretha Franklin could've gotten onstage with Nick Fuentes and Kyle Rittenhouse and I'd stil be screaming at the top of my lungs. 🎶

Janet is tea bet there's a time and place for her tea.

What about Madonna? Which this thread is about. Would Madonna have hurt her career if she was the one showing her breast? Would she had a pass just for being white? Would her Confession On The Dancefloor album been a flop? Would Hung Up floped or been just an average hit?

To my mind, asking someone to choose between Madonna and Janet Jackson is like asking someone to choose between a louse and a flea. They're both "pop royalty" though and in that business commerciality trumps race every day. It would appear that getting one's tits out doesn't sell records.

Interesting question. She also would have been fined...but if it happened after we'd already seen her tits on the runway or her show in Istanbul...I'll bet that it would have been less of a sensation.
