  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Would of, Should of, Could of

^ I would point out that it is theoretically possible for someone to say that they could care less....although it implies that at the moment of uttering these words, they are in the process of determining exactly how much too care and are just coming to the realization that they may be caring more than they feel the need to.

^^ (rareboy) Theoretically yes, but when Americans use the phrase "I could care less" they are normally using it to say "The level of importance attached to the subject to which I'm referring, is so low it couldn't get any lower."

It is very rare for them to use it if they're actually meaning "The level of importance attached to the subject to which I'm referring, may decrease further."

;)

Oh so you're going to go and get all "English" English are ya?

It's true though.

When I say Could have, would have, should have, it's usually in response to someone complaining about something, then not doing anything about it.

When this Texan says, "I couldn't care less...." for me it's a polite way of saying I don't give a fuck. ..|

But yeah, for someone to say "I could care less?"

That's just ignurt. ;)

...no one see what I did there?

It should've been 'LENT'!!!

Actually, in this case, it should be 'lend', but you figured it out.

I brought this up once before in this forum, mentioning that a lot of people are saying things like, "I borrowed him the money." I was told that English is a changing language. However, it's not meant to change to the point where antonyms become synonyms.

Though I'd dearly love to fix the errors made by the correctors of spelling and grammar posting in this thread, I shall rise above it lest I loose control of my righteous indignation and fall victim to Muphry's Law.
I see what you did there! ;)

Totally unrelated...

Is it learned or learnt and whilst or while... ? :)

Dear people-who-tell-us-to-chill-out,

Yes, we can still understand you when you mangle the language. We know it's what you have to say that is interesting and important, not how you say it.

But your unskilled use of the English language is like talking to you while you're saying something interesting and important with a small booger hanging out of your left nostril.

We can hear the words, we know you're saying something, but all we can think about is that damned booger. We want to hand you a kleenex....the "kleenex of grammar."

Laughs Out Loud.

I know some people are overly sensitive if they feel that their spelling or lack of grammar skills are being criticized. It isn't that you aren't loved for yourselves; your maladroit mangling of the English language is weighed against your other qualities....like the length of your cock, or your facial bone structure. My cat isn't good with grammar either, but I love him madly because he catches mice and he purrs nicely. But there is nothing quite as distressing as hearing some gorgeous young man open his mouth and realize that he is functioning at the same level as my cat...and does not catch mice.

Please also realize, that there is a huge difference between the English language changing and the decline of the ability to write and speak intelligently. So using this as an excuse to suggest that 'OMG I'm Gay.I C U R 1 2. lolz;)' is

By flagging these few egregious forays against the foundation of civilization as we know it, I think we hope that having had the incorrect use of 'of' pointed out to the innocently guilty, we may save you great embarrassment at some future date when your job or credibility as a sentient creature may depend on the proper employment of contractions.

and while we're at it !! -- writing is one thing - pronounciation is another.

some letters are SILENT people !!!

saLmon -- is sammon not SAL-mon
ofTen -- is off-en -- not of-TEN
and
CamPbells - as in the Soup Company -

is Cam-bell's NOT CAMP-bells !!!

and -- let us not forget --

"etc." (never used anymore) is ET-cetera -- not ECK-setera !!

I won't even address ASK/AXE - because that's truly a regional/almost dialect "thing" !!

but my local Pizza place makes a mean meatball sangwich !!

If I could just derail this thread for a moment....

THE PHRASE IS - "I couldn't care less"

I don't know how many times I've seen Americans on this forum continually getting that phrase wrong.

If you say "I could care less" you're saying there are actually circumstances that could be worse than you're actually feeling, so you're stating an equivocal position. It's the same as if you said: "It's entirely possible for me to care even less"

I don't know how it was that Americans were taught this phrase wrong.

I've always given the Yanks a pass for this.

Basically, the way I see it, "I could care less" says to me "I hardly care at all. I could care even less than I do, but that would require an effort which I'm not prepared to make because I hardly care to start with."

I mean, it's still wrong; but at least that way I could excuse them for being filthy foreigners and all.

To complete this thought cut short by being called away....

Please also realize, that there is a huge difference between the English language changing and the decline of the ability to write and speak intelligently. So using this as an excuse to suggest that 'OMG I'm Gay.I C U R 1 2. lolz' is the new standard for conversation between civilized and thoughtful homos suggests that a) You should not ever be an English teacher, and b) that you should never expect to be invited anywhere where you might be required to use more than one fork.

Ooh, Ooh. What about 'y'all?' I say it a lot. XD But then again, I'm from Texas.

Y'all is an acceptable contraction for You All.
