I went grocery shopping this afternoon and got in the checkout queue right behind a middle-aged lady who was pushing a grocery cart. In the basket was a single tub of Compliments margarine worth about $1.29 or so. She put her tub of margarine on the belt and pushed her cart on through, bought a plastic bag for 5¢, and paid for it all with a debit card.

Senior citizens a) generally don't have much money b) need a reason to go out c) are savvy not to carry cash around with them as they are an easy target.

Disclaimer, obviously not all senior citizens but you know...

She wasn't a senior citizen. She was younger than I am. I would have guessed her to be in her mid-40s.

maybe all she had in her bank account was less then 10 dollars
and banks don't let you withdraw from the atm's if under 20 dollars

maybe she had no choice.
but to do it this way

Even being partnered with the police chief is not a sure thing. Last year I was assualted for the first time by three young thugs at age 14. They bit off more than they could chew. I am an in shape old man under my loose fitting shirts, and so I gave them a thumping. To top all, their parents wanted to take me to court. But there were too many witnesses. Yes we are targets, and its the gray hair and the sometimes safe bet that we are pushovers. I have taken Kulindahr's truth to heart. I am now armed. I will probably not shoot, but I would not count on it.

gsdx...I don't think it's unusual at all. I've seen people pay for a 99-cent cup of coffee with a debit card. Just yesterday, I was at the post office and a man in front on me paid for two postage stamps with a debit card. This is where we are headed as the banks and even the governments are pushing for a "cashless" society.

I seldom carry around cash anymore. Even when I am out at the local bars, all of them accept debit cards now....even for tips. Most businesses love them because there are no fees (like with credit cards), they don't have to keep as much cash around and the amount is instantly taken out of your bank and into their hands. Unless I am making a big purchase, I don't even carry a credit card anymore. Just my debit card. Doing so also makes you think twice about spending too much because you have to have the money in the bank.

Why is it always women who do the silly things

I've seen men do worse

Why does that take nerve? Lot of people don't carry cash on them. I don't. That's why they invented the debit card.

If people want to pay with their debit cards - so what?

!oops!:?!oops!

I never EVER carry cash on me.
I LOVE my debit card and use it for everything.
Its just too dangerous to carry cash where I live.
I don't even carry change in my pocket.
If a store dosen't take my debit card, I don't shop there !

put simply, some people are just plain stupid. but then, society needs the bottom feeders in order for the rest of a civilised structure to work

Please explain what makes this person a stupid bottom-feeder? She used a debit card to make a purchase. That is what they are for. They're even faster than using cash because you don't have to sign for it, nor does the cashier need to make change, so she wasn't even holding up the people behind her.

If that makes her a stupid bottom-feeder, then I'm a stupid bottom feeder right with her. Send us both to hell.
