I've used debit card for things around or under a dollar before. I don't get charged service fees either
 
I don't carry cash very often .. and being diabetic , I had a low blood sugar attack one day and had to buy a 50 cent candy bar with a debit card ... it saved my life .

Also; several years ago when I was doing Bail Enforcement ... it was dark and I was watching a house from an alley ... a thug came up behind me, stuck a knife in my back and demanded my wallet ... I reached inside my jacket, pulled out my hand ... and shoved a 9mm in his face . He got 2 years for attempted robbery ...
