Would you join Athiests Church ??

My sweet little family-centered Methodist church closed a few years ago. There's some cult using the building now.

I haven't sought a new church home, although I did date a Methodist minister for a little while until he was transferred to Maryland.

I'm not an atheist. Just unchurched.

I am not sure, but they might be able to register as a non profit organization.

I know that's what the Atheist Community of Austin is registered as.

As for why they'd refer to themselves as a 'church' it's probably to communicate the type of experience they're trying to recapture.
Plenty of atheists would be into that.

I also want to note that there are atheists that object to appropriating the moniker of 'church' for atheistic purposes.
