I must say that he learned sign language much better than Data. For an android, Data did a piss-poor job of translating for Picard. In some cases, he was translating what Picard hadn't yet said.

I could actually understand the cutie in the video without having to look at the subtitles.

It was signed English. Sign language is much more compact and fragmented. It's like taking a sentence and eliminating all the unnecessary words and signing what's left.

No, it's a different language with its own syntax and the same time restrictions as a verbal language, but with signs that take longer to make than a verbal word does to say. Hence: fewer signs per sentence, for same information conveyed in a given time period as English.

That's not what I don't understand.

What I don't understand is this: Why is he using Signed English? Why would ANY deaf person use Signed English? It takes forever to say anything in it!

It's still adorable though.

Well, that and the fact that he's using Signed English (instead of real sign). But maybe that's all his boyfriend understands.

I know a deaf guy who has used Signing Exact English (SEE) his whole life. His family chose it over ASL when he was little.
