Abortions have existed for thousands of years & the current battle is pro LEGAL vs pro ILLEGAL. The question of WHY the abortion might be sought is interesting, but is it anyone elses business (beyond the potential mother)? And wouldn't that point of a "gay fetus" fall under the law covering hate crimes? Sometimes I think of that Bessie Smith song "Ain't Nobodys Business, If I Do".

Ultimately, it's a parents choice to keep or abort a baby .

That's the part I hate about technology today. We have prevention for sex, but when adults decide to kill a fetus, I get off the wagon.

I really feel for situations like rape and such, but we do have adoption, you know.

A life is priceless and I will ever be pro-life. I squirm every time I interact with friends and also family who went the abortion route.
I remain silent, but hope somehow, they will eventually feel the loss.

No, your becoming similar to him in asking crazy, philosophical questions. I usually enjoy your rebellious banter though. Feel free to call me whatever, I'm not easily offended and am not an emotional person. ;)

Where's the fun in that?

Well, I am pro choice, but I am against using abortion as a way to weed out a type of person.

I would get upset hearing that someone aborted a child with other genetic defects, let alone just because they are gay...

In India there is a thriving industry in aborting female babies in response to a growing demand for males, in preference to females. The female baby butchering industry in India has grown rapidly in recent years, as a result of Indian cultural factors which dictate the "apparent" advantages to parents, of a mother giving birth to a male.

The dowry system still reigns supreme in India, with the parents of a female being obliged to "cough up" large sums of money, gold, or property in order to marry off their daughter to a "worthy" male suitor.

Tragically there is an enormous amount of precedent to support the theoretical argument posed by the thread instigator.

The consequences of aborting so many females may well create a situation where males in India are obliged to turn to other males for their emotional and sexual needs, as a result of a shortage of females. :D

Nature has its way of repaying us in kind, when we choose to assume the role of playing at being God. God, help us!
Just imagine a world minus the wisdom of Oscar Wilde.

Too much abstract thought make men cruel, or so said Dostoyevsky.

Why did you choose to target "gay" foetuses? There is no such thing as a single gay gene - this is a common misconception made by people who have little, or no, understanding of genetics. This makes the argument far too hypothetical for discussion, and therefore pointless.

That aside...

Good to see the "Abortion is murder" clan rise up with their usual rhetoric without reason - you're very welcome. Listen, abortion is hear to stay - if you 'pro-life' people (or whatever you call your thought process) really believe that abortion should be outlawed, then you are naive.

Abortions will continue to occur whether you like it or not - you are only arguing for it to be carried out surreptitiously by the unqualified and unhygienic. Surely you would prefer it to be carried out properly by doctors with appropriate counselling for the mother before and after. Or do you not care for that?

I am in support of abortion in a safe environment without any guilt or stigma being attached by the usual suspects. Abortion should not be used as a method of contraception.

The best way to cut down on abortions, unwanted pregnancies and STDs is a full and frank discussion about sex education with school children. We can't do this because the usual people oppose this.

If the religious leaders want to reduce abortions then they need to take a long hard look at their own attitudes and ideals.

Abortion in certain cases is actually a better option than giving birth, especially if its a teen mother/ if there is risk involved in pregnancy or if the parents cant financially support the child, its better to abort than to raise [or try to raise] the child in utter poverty.
As far as the question of gay foetuses is concerned, let the technology first develop to identify the sexual orientation of a foetus then we will talk.

Why wait when we can ask now?

Ben

It is always a pleasure to see you back in the saddle. Your sense of irony always persuades me that there is a measure of common sense in all Welshmen, including my Welsh partner.

I am totally opposed to abortion but would never support outlawing abortion. In other words for the benefit of our American friends, I would never support the overturn of Roe v Wade.

I appreciate that outlawing abortion would return abortion to the control of the back street abortionist, and all the tragedies that arise therefrom.

With such a huge waiting list of potential (unfruitful) parents wishing to adopt children, it is my wish that a mother should give birth to her baby and then offer that child for adoption to those who are frantic to love and raise another human being.

Mate a lot of questions can be asked , but that doesnt mean that there is a logical answer to them, atleast not untill we see some scientific progress in that direction, it is too early to speculate about something like this as far as I am concerned, I like to tackle questions for situations which are at hand or which are bound to arise in near future, this situation is not going to arise for a long time unless we see a rapid and unprecedented development in genetics

At present, the number of unwanted children outweighs the number of would be adoptive parents (at least it does in the UK).

These would-be parents don't look to the adoption agencies nowadays, instead they look to the IVF Clinic so they can have a baby "all_of_their_own".

For those who do not know me, I am a hospital gasman (an anaesthetist/anaesthesiologist) as such I often carry out the anaesthetic for women undergoing Surgical Termination of Pregnancy (S.T.O.Ps) - some posters, no doubt, would see me held in court for conspiratory to muder.

It is very sad to see these women having STOPs. It is not the fly-by-night decision as some people make it out to be, and it is a decision that they will live with for the rest of there lives. There is always, in every case, a moment as you are inducing the anaesthetic that they open their eyes to make it stop - some change their mind in the anaesthetic room. Rightly or wrongly, they change their mind. Rightly or wrongly, some don't change their mind.

As stated above, I don't enjoy the STOP lists, but it must be done - I would much rather these women be under the care of myself and a surgeon than a struck-off nurse and a Dyson.

Ben,

I never judge the right of another human person to make their own very personal ethical decisions. Your decisions become your responsibility.

I appreciate that in your particular specialisation you are performing a much needed humane action in support of those pregnant mothers, who have also chosen a course of action that they must live with and take responsibility for.

.... pregnant mothers, who have also chosen a course of action that they must live with and take responsibility for.

I just hope that I never see these women again though on a STOP list. If they come back for another abortion for "social" reasons, I am not impressed.

Ben,

You are one of the few people on this board with whom I disagree so much on so many issues, and yet I have come to appreciate and respect the manner of the human being who teaches me to respect you, for your humanness and sense of respect for all human life.

Thanks for the Aids day thread and its horrific reminders.
