I was at the theatre last night and was asked to move to a lesser seat within our box because the people behind me said I was too tall. I have had my seat for ten years and have never been asked to move before. Would you have moved to a seat with a worse view? I declined. Was I an ass?

Was the view much worse on the other seat? It might have been something nice for you to do, especially if the asked kindly, but you were not obligated so you are not an ass.

No. When you buy theatre tickets they do not ask how tall you are and put the tall ones at the back. You choose from what's available at the price you want to pay, and beyond that it's pot luck. If you are exceptionally tall or short you have to take that into account and choose your seats accordingly.

You quickly adjust to a restricted view anyway. You can get a seat in the upper slips at Covent Garden which gives the worst view in the house. "No view of the stage" it says on the ticket. In fact you get a sideways view of about half of it (imagine a cube cut in half diagonally), plus the whole of the orchestra pit and a glimpse into the wing. When the action is underway your brain manages to fill in the bit you can't see, although you might miss something nice and gory like a stabbing. They cost £5 a pop, which is cheaper than a cup of coffee and a toasted sandwich in Starbucks.
