Telstra I haven't watched the clip yet but I will but before I do I just want to mention that last night I bought a book by Baqer Moin titled "Khomeini: Life of the Ayatollah." This afternoon I got through the first 4 pages and it seems very interesting.

I'm not sure how accurate this is.

It has to be remembered that the Nazi regime at the time was like the Chinese regime today - a rising power that everyone knew was run by "Bad people" - had scant regard for human rights - but was profitable to do business with.

It is also easy from this to see why the Palestinians were not (and are still not) very happy about their country being taken over by the descendants of people that last lived there a couple of thousand years before.

There does seem to be a lot of tructh in the saying that "Bad People" will naturally do bad things - but for "good People" to do really bad things - you need religion.

On the other hand Hitchens defence of "Western" motives does not ring true either.

There can no be no denying that the (to date) primarily Oil and Coal fueled economies of the idustrialised world are rapidly depleting these resources "on the cheap" from the (in the case of Oil - mostly Muslim) nations that own them.

Also in the historically recent past - Western Imperialism has been rampant - the USA itself is a land stolen by Europeans from it's previous owners.

As well as the genocide of many native owners - other horrific Western crimes against humanity include the US slave trade - which resulted in the enslavement of 9 million people and the death of 3 million "in transit".

The point being that there is no way that other people in the world can accept the good faith and pure motives of the West.

You do realize there's an enormous difference between Muslims and "brown people" as you put it, don't you?

Moreover, he never made the charge in that article of yours that "all" muslims hate Jews. And I found no such torture claim.

Just because he doesn't say all doesn't mean he doesn't mean all. He still attaches certain values and attitudes towards certain religions.

When certain religions espouse certain values, I feel he is entitled to attach them. For instance, Catholicism is anti-gay. The Pope thinks gay relations are improper. I see no reason to dispute the Pope's own understanding of his own beliefs and the doctrines he himself endorses.

So, if Christopher Hitchens points out that Catholicism is unable to deal rationally with homosexuality, he is only pointing out reality. What the hell is modernist rationality by the way?

Im a "Proud Athiest" - but not certain I'd like to be associated with Hitchens ideas.

At root - these do seem to have a strong racial element - not sure that means he is a "bad person" - but maybe not all he says is the truth

Another slightly minor issue I have against him is his derision of the bible that it's apparently something that fifth graders can write. Because fifth grader write about rape and creation stories like farts.
