What I don't get is this: why do the backscatter machines even take nude pics of you? At Schiphol Airport the machine shows a stick figure with a dot indicating where you've got something. Can someone explain?

I flew to the US in June and didn't have to deal with an x-ray or pat down..?

its become more pronounced as late. i'm not sure if there was an actual start date or its just become more prevalent.

Hmm, if the systems you're talking about are the same one being discussed here in Germany, then they're not necessarily based on X-Rays at all.
Before looking it up on Wikipedia I actually thought all these systems were terahertz scanners. And for those two different methods exist, one of which is purely passive and doesn't emit any radiation.

But even the backscatter X-Ray systems are likely to produce a lot less radiation than what you get during the flight.

But as with many new technologies will have to wait a few more years to be certain of their side effects.

My pat down at Schiphol nine years ago should have come with a proposal of marriage or at least some flowers and a thank you note.

And if someone gets on board with explosives hidden in their underwear can you imagine the outcry?

Either way doesn't make any difference to me, really. I think everyone's making a huge deal out of the security procedures. I don't have anything to hide under my clothes, so the body scan doesn't bother me. And as long as you stay still and let the guy do his job, the pat down isn't that much of a hassle.

I get annoyed a lot by the people who make a huge fuss about these security procedures. The new TSA pat down was enforced because someone was hiding bombs all over their junk. This is done to help you, it's for your (and everybody else's) safety. These people are professionals and they're only doing their job. They're not any happier than you are when they have to do this. Touching nuts for 8 - 12 hours isn't fun and they're not doing it for shits and giggles.

My roommate works @ Burbank airport as a security guard and has been enlightening me about this whole fiasco and to be honest I'm on his side. A lot of people who go to the airport are cunts.

But to answer your question I'd do the pat down instead of that X-ray thing.

X-rays are ionizing, i.e. they can screw up your insides.

Microwaves and radio waves are not, they are less energetic even than visible light that you get every day from the sun.
