X3 Plans, Before Ratner became director.

Ok as a long time X-Men fan...

See this post for details http://www.justusboys.com/forum/showthread.php?t=164197

I have to inject my 2 cents...

When Bryan Singer left the franchise I was sorely disappointed... because him being gay and the X-Men being a metaphor about gay issues and such it felt like he didn't want the chance to really play that up and help us fellow homos....

But I liked X3 not as much as X2 but I did genuinely like X3... Seriously if other comic book fans are going to jump all over a different media interpretation of something...especially something that has to do with mutation ( see: change) then you better be ready to defend your reasons why you liked the cartoon series of the 90's (which was horrible IMO) or anything else that has spun off of the original comic series....

Each media outlet brings about a different change to text of the original but remains true to the core of what the X-Men represent.... that is the fear and hatred of what we don't understand and how we should all learn to live with our own differences...

As I have already stated I hated the cartoon series ...upon retrospect it was the crappy animation that did it in for me ... but when it came to the movies I wasn't exactly thrilled with the first one... I saw it and as a long time fan I saw how many changes were made and focused on those at first...than I realized if you took it directly from the comic medium those that aren't fans aren't going to be won over... you have to change it a bit to make it more accessible...

Think back to the actual comic based Dark Phoenix Saga... it technically began in issue 101 and ended in 137.... thats 36 months of storytelling... 3 years... how do you condense 3 years of storytelling into movie format... especially when it involves a mad alien emperor, a cosmic entity, the destruction of another solar system and a battle on the moon... simply put ..You can't. You have to make changes along the way to make it more compatible with the medium your trying to use...

Plus any comic book junkie will tell you that The Dark Phoenix Saga is one of the greatest stories ever told... It was written by a writer far beyond his years... A writer who introduced the world to the first female leader of any superhero team ever( That being Storm)... That writer is named Chris Claremont... he is considered a legend among the readers and the writers of comics...

If he had a problem with the way his legacy... his shining moment... was being portrayed in the movie... would he have agreed to make a cameo in the movie?

Just my two cents and my defense of X3...take what you will I stand behind the entire franchise from its comic inception to the many media incarnations its had over its 40+ years....

Theres a reason its the top grossing comic based franchise, the most popular and most widely accepted... because no matter what it stays true to the true meaning of the series itself....

And on the note of Gambit...while I do enjoy the character... I personally think he is way to overhyped... and I'm glad he wasn't in the film... I was glad to see characters of minor import make appearances... Plus you already have ubiquitous Wolverine...why spoil all the fun by throwing in only the favourites and casting off the rest?

And if you really need reasons to like X3 I have 3
1) the Beast... Kelsey Grammer was perfect for the role... ABSOLUTELY PERFECT
2) the film featured all 5 of the original X-Men.. Beast, Angel,Iceman,Cyclops, and Jean
3) Fastball Special ...come on thats like patented....

I liked X3, although the second one is defintely my favorite. Kelsey Grammer was absolutely perfect as Beast, and it is always a thrill to see Ian McKellan's performance as Magneto. And while the announcement of yet another appearance of Wolverine in the comics always elicits a groan, I really like Hugh Jackman in the movies. I hope there is a fourth one to resolve the issues left hanging at the end.

I never liked the 90's animated series because the pacing always semed too rushed. It was like they were trying to get through the dialogue and story as quickly as possible so they could show ACTION!! and MUTANT POWERS!! without having to bother with such ridiculous notions as performance or motivation.

Hopefully Bryan Singer is done screwing up Superman and will return for X4.

First off, to the OP, the idea of the White Queen/Emma Frost character is a new one to me. I had only heard brief rumors of her being in the movie. Even when Singer was attached, I thought that the end story had pretty much been determined...the story that made it to the theaters, with the exception of the ending, I belive that was Ratner's doing. I had heard many rumors of Tatum auditioning for the role of Gambit, but even then it was still going to be a small role.

As for the movie, I still feel X2 is arguably the best comic based movie ever (I said arguably). The two directors, Singer & Ratner, took two completely different views on the films. Singer was more into the emotional and character side of the story while Ratner was all about the action. I was a bit disappointed in the outcome of some of the characters in X3, and some of the dialogue just plain sucked. If you look at the box office take for X3, I believe it did close to$85 million domestically in the first weekend, then kinda took a nose dive after that. However, it did gross more than Superman Returns. Thats my take.

Which is probably because Superman franchises usually require amazing feats and ingenuity, noneof whichw ere present in Singer's Superman. Singer has a thing for emotional stories, backdropped by the fact that the characters are superheroes. So he kind of sucked at putting in the action element to Superman.

Ratner had the other problem, basically.

As for Emma Frost, I had heard for quite some time that Sigourney Weaver was supposed to play Emma Frost and later that Ashley Hartman was supposed to play her, which confused me. Either way, in the rumors that have stood since X3 came out, Singer's original plan was to do the Phoenix in X3, and then cover Dark Phoenix in X4. I suppose Emma Frost's influence would be more present in turning Jean over in X3 and probably less important in X4.

I had also heard that ANTM runner up Mercedes McNab would be cast as M for X3, but that never happened either, though she was in preliminary credits on IMDB before the movie came out.

Regardless, if that was Singer's plan, he really only has himself to blame for it not coming to fruition. I still feel that in the end, the choice was his to continue the X-series or direct Superman and that the fall-out isn't because Fox just wouldn't let him do both. What company can? It would rude to the fans who awaited X3 as well to delay the project. And in the end, knowing how he had set up the previous movies and how he wanted the next two to be, he dropped it. As far as fans of the franchise go, I think he let them down. I certainly was.

Trouble with "Superman returns" was the inability of Singer to reinvent the hero. He did a kind of remake/sequel of the original.

Did anyone watch the end of X-Men 3...after the credits, where they show a man in bed and Dr. Moira says "Professor?"

You can bet there always will be a sequel for a film who made 230 millions at the box office.

Except their explanation for who that incapacitated body is was completely stupid. Without explaining it at all, we're going to comment that this is supposed to be the body of Charles' male incapacitated twin brother, which is alright ebcause int he comics he has a femal incapacitated twin sister. Lame.

There was a brief explanation of this dude in the hospital bed early in the movie when Prof. X is teaching his class. It is just a patient of Dr. McTaggert's who happens to be in a coma. Prof. X was talking with his class about the possablity of somebody's sub-conscience having the ability to transfer to another persons body. That little snippet at the end just proved it was possible.

As for an actual confirmation of a 4th movie, I have not heard this. I have heard Halle Berry mention the fact that she is pushing for more and for the fans to keep the pressure on to make it happen, but nothing confirmed as far as I know.

i actually really liked X3. but seeing channing in it - would have added a nice touch.

I don't mean that. I mean how in the commentary, they reveal that the incapcitated man is supposed ot be Charles' twin brother. We know he's some guy int he movie, but then inc ommentary they say stupid shit like "Oh it's his brother, and that has warrant because Charles has a twin sister in the comics (Cassandra Nova)." They're hardly comparable at all. You might as well not say anything if you're going to try to do half-assed tie-ins. Just start clean.

Oh...I am pickin up what you're layin down. My bad.

Random geeky question for anyone: I just finished the civil war series of comics, what big marvel storyline should i pick up next?

Rogue in the movie always reminded me of Jubilee from the X-Men cartoon,
and I felt they did a horrible job at picking an actress for her character

Anna Paquin?????????
=/

I wanted to see a spicy voluptuous Southern Belle

I'm hoping X4 would feature Emma Frost, as she is such a huge character in the books right now.

Gambit needs to be left alone - bad idea of the 90's I think, and I know alot of fanboys like myself really don't like the character.

X3 wasn't a bad movie, it was just way more 'commercial' than the first two. There was alot of good stuff in the movie, really:
1. Finally getting the see the Danger Room, and then combining it with a Days of Future Past homage and a Sentinel cameo
2. Using Whedon's amazing 'Gifted' as a plotline (albeit the primary story, in comparison to the much more superior Phoenix story)
3. Tonnes of appearances and cameos - including a very, very brief Stepford Cuckoos appearance, which made my day
4. The ending, with Xavier in Moria's lab - I think it's mentioned somewhere that his name is Amahl Farouk. aka, the Shadow King? One of Xavier's greatest foes
5. And finally, the absolutely incredible performance by the actress who played Shadowcat, I can't remember her name right now. Bringing her to life so realisitically made the movie totally worth it.

(But on a side note - is anybody sick of seeing the Canadian forests used as locations, because of filming in Vancouver? All the X-Men movies, Elektra, Fantastic Four 2 - all had scenes set in the forest. It's really starting to bug me)
