Yale student commits suicide by jumping from Empire State Building

If he were Fat with an Unfortunate Looking Face, would
you have posted this thread?

Read what I posted in this thread please.

I posted this because I thought this was a somewhat unusual way to kill yourself.

I was not suggesting his life was worth more than an ugly person's.

Plenty of people kill themselves each and every day.

Why should we pretend to "feel" for this one more than others?

Because he was young?
Because he was cute?
Because he did it off of a well-known landmark, making his story more news-worthy?

Actually, they're all excellent reasons.

Rest in peace Cameron. There is rhyme and reason behind everything in this universe. I'm sure you had your reasons too.

I don't understand why they don't put barbed wire there to keep people from getting over.

The selfish kid put other innocent people on the ground at risk, luckily it was raining and not many people were out. He should have jumped off the GW bridge.
The vast majority of the people in this state are not selfish, they're mentally ill. If one cannot be rational, then he can't be selfish. They're mutually exclusive.

Calling someone who commits suicide selfish not only is wrong, it does nobody any good.

That's very sad. When I was a Freshmen in college, we had a student jump from the 17th floor at our building in downtown Manhattan. I can only imagine what Yale's student body is going though. I'm suprised that no one noticed him on the observation deck seeing how there are always tons of people, day or night, and it takes work getting over the tall barricade to jump off.

EDIT: How did that Lady GAGA remark get into my post when I didn't put it there?

One pressing question is: Was the kid gay?? His family is from Texas?? Did his gayness had to do with it???

I hope not.... but I can't help but wonder (Prayers for Bobby comes to mind).

Anyways RIP :(

Some of these answers may become known in the next few days. When such a tragedy happens, there are always a lot of questions asked. No answers, though, will bring Cameron back.

Prayers for Bobby was indeed a great movie! I would have "had to" see it even if it wasn't my type of movie, because in summer 2009 I happened to run into one of the scenes preparing to be filmed, in Royal Oak, Michigan. It was fun picking out some scenes that I recognized (only part was filmed there), but it's an excellent movie with an important message.

Well there are people in inescapably extreme physical pain who want to end their lives.

I'm going to suggest that people in extreme pain, either phsyical or emotional are not necessarily thinking rationally.

THAT said, personally, I am in FAVour of people who are suffering from terminal illnesses, and whose quality of life has been severly impacted negatively, with no currently medical means of surcease for them, to end their lives if they so choose.

:=D::=D: As soon as the "Death With Dignity" law was passed in Oregon years ago, that caused me to respect Oregon even more than I had. It's the final decision that some people make with their own bodies. When no options are left, as in The_Pianist second paragraph, I strongly feel that the option should exist to choose to commit suicide, along with the option of securing appropriate help and the best advice, so that it can be done in a way which is the least painful to the person dying, and the most considerate of others (including both loved ones and strangers).

Highly unlikely that Cameron was dealing with such a scenario which would have included suicide as a sensible option. I hope for healing, for all those affected by the tragedy.

and i didn't write this:
"First I have to say I lately really came to believe that Lady Gaga ROCKS!!!"

There's a picture of the barriers...courtesy Ralph Pache.

Looking at them closely, it does seem like it would be fairly easy to scale them. :( Not good.

It doesn't look easy, but it doesn't look like it's impossible to do if you are athletic.

What a tragic loss. I'm sure lot's of people in the Yale community are wondering what they failed to notice.

That's terrible... jumping off the ESB. A permanent solution to a temporary problem. I feel for his friends and family.

PSA soapbox: Anyone climbing over a barrier on the ESB or thinks the unthinkable is the solution is suffering from a serious mental illness or disease and needs to either get help or given help ASAP. This hits home because many gay men are struggling with depression in one form or another. It is also an increasing mental illness. This is why it's so important to recognize the early signs of depression in others. The earlier it's treated the more likely the person will return to normal brain functioning.

I can't help but think how many depressed people who took their lives who should have either sought help or had an intervention from friends could have gone on to contribute of society. What if Einstein, or Martin Luther King or Gandhi had killed themselves? What would the world be like today?

Depression is a cancer of the mind and most likely will kill you if left untreated: End of PSA.

A good looking Yale student had a bright future and ended it all. I can't help but think the thought, "this was a mistake" cross his mind as he fell. Simply tragic.
