I am not baiting or picking a fight -

I am asking to learn - what is going on in NY? Ok their record is not that bad and they are not that far out but it has been a while (like years? decades?) we've seen what we see when we look at the standings

so without Yankee bashing - we can do that in another thread - since we all hate the Yankees - what is going on with this team, pray tell?

Yeah, it's unusual.

I filled a gap in my baseball experience this month. I realized that this is the final season for Yankee Stadium, and I'd never seen a baseball game there. I was there for the closing ceremonies of Gay Games in 1994.

So on a cold Friday evening, May 2, I saw the Yankees beat Seattle in their classic old ballpark.

I saw the Yankees win before (a couple of years ago, here in Philadelphia), but I'm glad I got to see them at their traditional home. It's an old ballpark with few amenities, so I can see why they'd build a new one across the street!
But the field is gorgeous.

JackF: It is presumptuous of you to think that "we" all hate the Yankees. Believe it or not, some people like the NY Yankees very much.

The Yankee have a record of 22-25 after 47 games. Last year after 50 games they were 21-29 and still qualified for the playoffs. It may be too soon to write off the Yankees (or the Indians, Tigers, Blue Jays, A's, Twins ...) as they must still play 115 more baseball games. It may take as few as 85 wins to be the wild card in the American League this year.

It is all about being one of the four teams that get to play in the post season. The Yankees have a chance as well as any of the other 11 teams to become the wild card. Stay tuned.

please I beg you - this is sports talk - I specifically said no Yankee bashing and made a tongue in cheek reference to "we" and you are taking that way way to seriously - and I regret that is the Yankee fan stereotype, no sense of humor, total arrogance, and I mean no harm in that or my post.

I also regret your not answering my question. Obviously nothing is over. This is May. Where it August we'd have 1977 as a guide for us.

Your team has already been in my ball park and will not be back this year. I won;t see your team again. The Yankees are obviously not at full tilt right now. That's what I was asking - what is the current issue.

If you were to have asked that same question about the White Sox last week, I would have answered that our hitting was woeful. That has picked up and we've won 8 straight and gone into first. I was asking - what is holding you back today. I was not pronouncing the Yankees dead. I was not dancing on a Yankees grave. I simply asked what the current lack-of-firing-on-all-cylinder is.

It must be your hope that Girardi sees the problem and is trying to correct it. I perhaps should have asked him - but I hoped a fan would answer.

By the way, I saw Jeter play his high school ball. He was a star back then - destined to be an MLB great - and has the nicest family and is warmly regarded as a human being by those who have contact with him now. He has been good to his home town. I say that so you understand not every comment is Yankee bashing.

JackF: I regret not answering your initial question as to what is wrong with the Yankees. I too wish I could ask Girardi or GM Cashman. Allow me to speculate as to how they would answer our questions.

The Yankees decided to develop pitching from within the organization rather than go after free agent pitchers who would want long term contracts. Coming out of spring training the Yankees hoped for the immediate success of two young pitchers with very little major league experience. Neither of the young pitchers who the Yankees had counted on has won a game so far. One was sent to the minors (and is back) and the other is on the DL. Another pitcher is 39 and probably should not have been re-signed in 2006 for 2 years. Good pitching (vs. hitting) is critical as we well know. You cannot expect a team to score 7 or 8 runs per game in order to win. Currently, the Yankees are not pitching very well and they are not hitting very well. The Yankees also have a few older players in the last year of their long term contracts earning salaries that are very high and thus not tradeable. There are options that the front office will make in order to be much more competitive in a tough division and my hope is that by August, the most important month of the season, the Yankees will be pitching better and hitting better.

All Yankee fans would like to see the Yankees can go 65-50 or better and make a run for the wild card.

Postscript: Nine years ago I was able to get Derek Jeter to sign a baseball for me. I told him how much I enjoyed watching him play and he remarked that it was very nice of me to say that. Jeter is the heart of the Yankees.

Thanks flyingfree, that gives insight, thanks

one reason for my question is that I believe this is only the third time in modern history the NY club has been in sole possession of last this late in the season - which speaks to the fine overall record of the Yankees as well as this being historic -

Jeter is so wonderful - I remember the first time I saw play in MLB, I didn't know he had been called up from Columbus and this player walks out on the field and he caught my eye - I was so impressed with his warm up and his presence - and then found it was Jeter!!!!!!

Yankees not in last any more -

and Tampa in first!

congrats Rays fans!

Tampa Bay...first...what...where....HUH?!

I need to lie down. I've been in school and my roomate and I did not have a functional television, so my baseball access was minimal. This is a shock.

and today Tampa Bay in first place and Yankees back in last place

No the White Sox are in first place

if there are other Sox, please identify them fully :-)

As of this morning: the White Sox lead their division by 2 games

the AL franchise in Boston is in second place by 1/2 game in their division

ANgels are up by 2 in the their division

Yankees (subject of this thread to some degree) are in last place 1.5 games behind the Os and 6 behind Tampa (and Tampa this morning has the best record in the AL)

Go White Sox!

1st place White Sox play four at 1st place Tampa Bay - this should have its own thread

Awesome game yesterday with the Yankees 12-11 win over the Royals.
They came falling behind then coming back, then falling behind and coming back.
18 hits and a Johnny Damon walk off hit to win the game in extra innings.
Just a terrific clutch performance by Damon.
A lot of fun to watch, a great game!

I may be a major Mets fan but I hate to see the once mighty Yankees playing as badly as they have been. I was at a party outside but kept coming back to the house to watch parts of the game, it was too good to miss.

For the record, Johnny Damon went 6 for 6 and had the winning RBI in a nine inning game though it may have seemed like an extra innings Yankees win.

Five hits in 5 at bats is a rarity and an accomplishment. It is not very often that a player goes 6 for 6 in 9 innings.
