  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Yay for being discriminated against!

It makes sense. I think it just takes your being willing to put your security on the line. If you're willing to do that to make a political statement, and if it's something you truly believe in, then kudos to you. Really.

You should not be afraid to be yourself because of what someone might do to you. That is the epitome of 're-closeting' yourself. If you're comfortable enough with yourself to share it with others, you should not be afraid to do so. And it is NOT a political statement; since when is being yourself 'political'?

The only way for people to understand that this behavior will not be tolerated is to air their behavior in public and let the world see them for the bigots they are. You have the law, and what is right, on your side, and that is all that matters.

You have your perception, I have my own. Some of us don't want or need to discuss our personal lives at work, so that kind of outlook is what framed my responses.

Agreed, but there is still a political aspect involved due to the nature of the ordeal and the potential for a discrimination suit.

Fair enough.

I'd only see it as political if you took the job knowing your boss was conservative, and knowing full well that it was a possibility for you to be fired because of your sexuality. It isn't clear that that is the case here.

Well, the OP claims he had some suspicion of his boss's likely bigotry, so that leads me to believe that he was ready and willing to legally challenge her.

It'd be political if that was his motivation for taking the job in the first place.

I see what you're saying, but the situation became political, in my view, when he willingly came out to her and expected open arms. Again, it's just my view of the situation and the way I perceive the work environment.

I didn't expect open arms. I didn't expect anything. I don't think that people understand what equality is really.
When I meet a straight person, and they mention their boyfriend or girlfriend, I don't give them open arms. I don't say "Yeah! Heterosexuality! Awesome!!" I treat them like I would anyone else.
I expected that I would mention my boyfriend, and that my boss would treat me the same exact way.

Please do not assume anything about me, or put words into my mouth. Because you are probably going to be very wrong.

Exactly my point. Therein lies the problem, IMHO.

Well, in this particular case, I was right.

That being said, I already stated I agreed with the legal action you are planning to take, and gave you kudos.

Oh I see. Well, it seemed like you were saying something different before. Like you actually thought that I came out to my boss expecting her to throw up her hands... and I was just kinda thinking... that is not me lol.

My mistake. And thanks for the kudos :)

Suing bigots for fun and profit! And justice!

I have two words for you:
Tape Recorder!

It is the difference between "settling for an undisclosed sum, with no admission of wrongdoing" and "judgement in your favour plus costs."

But I suppose mentioning it now is kind of like closing the barn door after the ship has sailed...

What the fuck. The naysayers in this thread are so, so depressing.

To the OP - you should DEFINITELY take legal action and sue her ass. Contact the ACLU.

To the people saying it's his fault for coming out in what he knew might be a bigoted environment. Wtf? We don't assume they're bigoted enough to fire us for being gay, maybe they shouldn't assume everyone is straight. Great job, promoting the closet, silence, and manipulating the situation from simply providing information that you're in a relationship with someone of the same-sex compared to "making them taste the rainbow." That's EXACTLY what straight people say - "I don't mind if he's gay, just as long as they don't act gay in public." You should be absolutely ASHAMED of yourself. There's no reason you should feel like you have to hide or downplay a part of your life. Heterosexuals don't have to do that and neither should we. Notice he only brought it up when ASKED about it, he didn't even provoke anything. Way to side with the enemy, cowards.

Sooo... I've set a date for later this month. You are my soul-mate. Just go with it ;)

Be sure to turn the faucet off when you're done.

Don't you have better things to be doing, like handing out Bibles are promoting abstinence only education and encouraging straight people to fire gay employers? I bet you support don't ask don't tell. You're more conservative than the woman in your avatar. Get real.
