I should have great breath then :D

If you’ve tried mints, mouthwash and toothpaste but your breath still offends, maybe you should skip the oral hygiene aisle. Next time, try the dairy case.

In a small study, Japanese researchers have found that eating traditional, sugarless yogurt reduces the malodorous compounds that cause bad breath. It also cuts down on plaque and gingivitis, they discovered.

The study, funded in part by a major Japanese yogurt maker, was presented March 10 at the International Association for Dental Research annual meeting, in Baltimore.

Halitosis, or bad breath, is caused by anaerobic bacteria that breed on the back of the tongue, producing volatile sulfur compounds. One of those compounds, hydrogen sulfide, is the stuff that causes your breath to smell like rotten eggs.

Lead author Kenichi Hojo and colleagues from Tsurumi University in Yokohama, Japan, decided to investigate yogurt because of its effects in preventing gastrointestinal problems and research indicating that regular yogurt consumption reduces the risk of dental decay.

"We are thinking that yogurt must be good for oral health, also," said study co-author Nobuko Maeda, a professor of microbiology at the university.

Researchers recruited 24 volunteers. Each person received identical instructions for oral hygiene, diet and medication intake. In the initial phase of the study, participants were asked not to consume yogurt or products containing streptococci and lactobacilli, such as cheese and pickled vegetables. During the second phase, they consumed 90 grams of yogurt, or a little more than 3 ounces, twice a day for six weeks.

Researchers collected samples from the participants’ saliva and tongue coatings, and measured volatile sulfide compound concentrations in the air of people’s mouths. Those measures showed that, at six weeks, hydrogen sulfide levels decreased in 80 percent of volunteers who had bad breath.

"So we thought two yogurts per day did work for improving (bad breath)," Maeda said.

In addition, plaque and gingivitis was significantly reduced in people with bad breath after the yogurt-intake phase of the study, compared with the initial phase when they did not consume yogurt.

This is true. I've eaten yogurt since i was in diapers and my breath is never a problem, although i never gave it a thought that yogurt was a reason. Since i gave up dairy and meat i have gotten hooked on soy yogurt, which you all must try. Stonyfield makes the best tasting one called "O'Soy" which is every bit as good as dairy yogurt, nobody can tell it's dairy free. Soy yogurt also lacks that sometimes sour taste of dairy yogurt, and it's far better for you.

I'm a yogurt fan, too! But is sugarless yogurt even available in the USA?

Well, it would be pretty to think so, as they say. But years of unsuccessful experiments have convinced me that the only real solution is to brush frequently, floss frequently, and use a tongue scraper. And don't get dehydrated, cause that really gets your breath stinky in a hurry.

yogurt is a wonder food, the live culture in the natural yogurt [plain, no sugar added] kills alot of the bad germs in your body. eat about a cup a day for a few weeks and you will notice you will be more regular in bowel movements and there won't be the bad smell in the bathroom. health food stores sell the best yogurt and its easy to make your own. its just milk and active culture. google "make yogurt" and find many recipes.

Just make sure you guys only eat the unsweetened, plain kind. American yoghurt is full of corn syrup and other sugars. I once saw a single-serving storebrand yoghurt from Safeway that had 42 grams of sugar -- as much as in a can of pop. It actually made me really angry, because on the label it said "Light Yoghurt," just because it was fat-free. No wonder our countrymen are getting so fat.

Where my family (ancestrally) are from they drink a more liquidy, and really sour kind of yoghurt that they call "airaan" -- usually made from sheep's milk. There didn't used to be refrigeration there, so it was the only way to keep milk. Definitely no corn syrup in that. Here, we have to settle for the cow stuff. The Chinese say that stuff cures baldness and increases your libido, too, but that's probably a myth.

You should be able to get Plain Yogurt in just about any grocery store. Don't confuse vanilla with plain, though; definitely not the same thing.

I usually eat plain yogurt with half a banana and some fresh or frozen fruit (blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries) as a mid-afternoon snack. The sweetness from the fruit is enough for me; I never add sugar.

My favorite brand is Seven Stars Farm.

I used to be able to buy Bulgarian-style yogurt -- it had a wonderfully sour taste. Haven't seen it in a while, though.

I eat greek-style yogurt most mornings. It's nothing like American yogurt. It is drained of all the water and has a cheese-like consistancy and has a sharper taste. I buy "3 Greek Guys" brand at my Whole Foods Market. You can also make a reasonable facimile of it by straining unsweetened whole milk yogurt in a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth. Strain it for 6-8 hrs. at room temp and it will sharpen the taste as well as rid itself of the water which is about 50%.

I once heard Martha Stewart mention on T.V. that she always eats the local yogurt daily when she travels out of the country and she avoids upset stomach. Makes since that the natural cultures help fight bacteria and such. I will certainly practice this when I travel internationally.

I like my yogurt drizzled with honey and maybe add berries and/or granola.

i buy a brand named "mountain high". it was started by a couple hipples over 30 years ago around the denver area. it has 5 cultures in it. most brands have only 1 or 2. it has no fillers or sugars, just milk and culture. i also use it for my starter for homemade yogurt. i eat it plain mostly, i've acquired a taste for it.

Think I'll be hitting the yogurt now that I've had a couple slices of garlic sourdough bread.

ewww....sorry....

but that reminded me of craiggg's question in his thread about foreskin care....>>>http://justusboys.com/forum/showthread.php?t=110390

I'm wondering how you uncut guys go about cleaning your foreskin. Do you peel it back and scrape it out? Do you use a special soap? *clip*

i know, slobone - i'm the perv....and you're the one who suffers for it......sorry....also for the hijack...now back to topic offtopic:....
