I think you'll find, if you look closely enough, the phrase "in most cases" in my original post to prevent exactly this type of response. So much for careful foresight and planning.

People who get raped and who are exposed to contaminated blood are the ones who probably can't prevent it. Those sharing needles or involved in unsafe sex practices are choosing not to prevent it.

I'm also pretty sure that most people who get most diseases don't "ask for it" either, incidentally.

I have a very close friend who is infected because the partner he trusted cheated on him & infected him. Are you saying he asked for it because he trusted his partner of 5 years and had bareback sex with him?
 
^Fine, he can go into the unfortunate unpreventable category - it's a tragic and horrible story. But the partner cannot, I shouldn't think.

I'll also wager that this sort of thing wouldn't account for the majority of cases, but I'm open to correction on it.

How can you be so cold as to categorize people with HIV/AIDS? NOBODY asks for it (except the "bug chasers"), even those who engage in some risky behavior.

There are no categories. Either you have it or you don't.

Have you ever sat & talked with an infected person? have you ever watched one of your friends wither away from it? Have you ever asked for education at an HIV clinic? I guess my question is what experience, other than pop culture, do you base your views & opinions?
 
I think you guys are blowing this out of proportion.

I said "exposed to contaminated blood" as a blanket term to include needlestick injuries (and I have had one of those myself, by the way, containing blood from a guy who'd just had a needlestick from an HIV+ patient. We were both fortunate, though) such as would occur with a doctor, nurse, lab tech, paramedic, lifesaver doing mouth-to-mouth, someone getting a transfusion from a blood bank where a pint has slipped through undetected, someone who is in a car accident where all occupants in the car end up bleeding all over each other (had friends who've been there and done that, too).

Here in South Africa we have a culture who does not even believe HIV necessarily exists. We have cultures whose elders tell them to sleep with a virgin to cure their HIV (I'm being dead serious, here). We have cultures who believe using condoms robs them of their masculinity.

Fact of the matter remains - your sexual health and wellbeing is up to YOU, not the person you're sleeping with. You have to protect yourself. In fact, I'm going to leave this bit right here, because you guys KNOW this stuff.

If you want to take a risk, you have to be prepared to lose. Personally, I wonder how many people would revert to unsafe sex practices should a proper cure for HIV and AIDS become available. We still do things like walk barefoot in the gym shower even though we know we will probably catch Athlete's foot because it's treatable and not terminal. Will a cure for AIDS make us think anything through better than we do now?

You can call me jaded or whatever you want but in some cases, you reap what you sow.

I am a malariologist by trade, but my department specialises in TB treatment. HeEre in .za, and particularly in the Western Cape where Cape Town is, TB and HIV go hand in glove. Almost everyone living in poverty (and it is a lot of people) is at huge risk of contracting TB - we have the highest incidence of it in the world, you know - and anyone who is not wealthy who has HIV most definitely co-presents with TB. I am based at a state hospital and working through a state university. Half the guys in my office are malariologists, the other 4 are doing the HIV/TB thing. That is what I base my views and opinions on.

I would choose cancer.

Afterall, our Minister of Health in SA, Dr. Manto Tshabalala-Msimang (or "Dr Beetroot"), believes she's got the AIDS problem covered with her prescription of beetroot, garlic, lemons, and African potatoes!
 
I would say cancer because there is really nothing to absolutly cure it.. some people beat it wiht help, and others lose :( and its really sad too
 
AIDS...definitely. Why? Not only has it killed a lot of people...it has instilled the fear of sex into millions of others and so many people live their lives afraid of sex...I think open sexual expression is necessary for personal growth...

I would go for the greatest good for the greatest number and cure heart disease.
 
As much as I do sincerely fear many diseases, I wouldn't "release a cure for one" by magic or genie wish because I think we have a population problem as it is, and the world isn't grown up enough to be comfortable with a frank discussion about sustainability.

I hear ya.

It has stifled people in horrible ways that the threat of getting cancer never has.
 
A cure for AIDS would not be as effective as we think. An easy cure for syphilus has existed since 1940 or so, but it is still a problem.
