Same here. people look at me as though i'm simple.
I've had the same experience.
With this thread in mind, I did a lot of smiling today as I walked and drove around, and took note of the reactions. I was in Westwood Village (a college town) and Beverly Hills.
Black men and women are the friendliest group of people around, the men particularly so. When I smile at a black guy on the street I generally get an actual verbal response such as, "How's it going, man?" I heard this twice today from the two black men I encountered.
People with dogs are very friendly.
Hispanic immigrants are very friendly.
Old people are very friendly.
Americans of any ethnicity are generally friendlier than foreign visitors, except the Irish I encountered, who stopped to talk, and suggested we find a place to have a pint.
Handsome straight guys are friendlier than not-so-handsome straight guys. Same is true of gay men, but drop-dead gorgeous straight guys with killer smiles are the friendliest of all. Juiced body-builders are both mellow and friendly. The bigger the friendlier.
Beautiful women are friendlier than no so beautiful women. Beautiful women with perfect hair and makeup are particularly friendly. Pretty Lesbians dressed as teenage boys are OK, ugly Lesbians with ugly tattoos and Social Justice Warrior-type women are actively hostile.
Driving around Beverly Hills I smiled and waved at people in the tour busses, thinking they'd be pleased to be greeted by an obvious local--but only children and a lone black woman smiled and waved back, which surprised me.
